; The revolution of the Zapatista National Liberation Army, the EZLN (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional), was held in 1994 in Chiapas, Mexico, and is still going on. The EZLN is fighting for a legally recognized status of the indigenous population of Mexico and an improvement of their situation. After a general section which reflects a definition of 'indigenous population' a historical, economic and political analysis of Mexico and Chiapas will be done. After this, a detailed investigation of the EZLN in the period from 1980 until 2001 will be carried out. Discrimination and violation of human rights as well as biopiracy, genetically modified maize and biodiversity are the substantive points of the following chapter. Furthermore, this thesis will address the question whether a violent revolution may be regarded as morally legitimate. Therefore, the Social Teaching of the Catholic Church as well as established criteria which can legitimize a revolution in special circumstances will be discussed. An ethical evaluation of the uprising of the EZLN and the situation of the indigenous population of Mexico is the intended aim of this thesis. ; eingereicht von Anita Tiefengraber ; Graz, Univ., Dipl.-Arb., 2010 ; (VLID)211895
