The philosophy of Henry George (1839-1897) -- a self-styled journalist, economist, & political theorist -- was spurred by the California land rush of the mid-1800s. Opposed to land monopolies because of ecological reasons, George attempted to rally the cause of the Californios whose land was seized by the government in a vein not dissimilar to that of the Native Americans. George also took upon himself the causes of the near-socialist Left, workers' rights, women's rights, & suffrage. Other causes that concerned him were income distribution, social inequality, & prison reform. His efforts for these causes & the publication of his book, Progress and Poverty (1880), made him the champion of labor, not only in the US, but in Australia, New Zealand, & the UK as well. Though never elected to political office, George made a lasting impression on political history. K. A. Larsen
