Abstract: This research is aimed to produce model test of reading comprehension for Islamic Studies which is one of the sections of English Proficiency Test (EPT) in UIN SMH Banten. This is Research and Development (R&D) which employs ADDIE model i.e. Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The data are reading texts which are developed based on Islamic Studies and General Science needed in Islam. The result produces a new model of reading comprehension (third section) of EPT in UIN SMH Banten, i.e. model Test of English (TE)-A, TE-B, TE-C, and TE-D. Each of the model test consists of 50% Islamic Studies and 50% general science needed in Islam. For Islamic Studies consists of seven themes i.e. Al-Qur'an and Hadith Studies, Jurisprudence (Fiqh), Morality (Akhlaq) belief (Tauhid) Mu'amalah, and Siasah. The General Science consists of seven themes i.e. Economy, Law, Linguistics, Education, culture, arts, and politics. The level of difficulty of the texts is standardized into academic reading standard that is usually used in Universities and Colleges.

This article gauges the transcultural character and disposition of Islamic Studies, a discipline of European origins that emerged in the early modern period and has been accused of catering to the needs of a colonial and imperialist agenda. It establishes that a discipline with a history of formulating largely non-Muslim Western perceptions on non-Western societies marked by Islam, whose object of study is a religious orbit that transcends ethnic and political boundaries, can be regarded as transcultural per se. This does not mean, however, that the transcultural approach—presented here as a methodological tool for conceptual deconstruction and a multiplication of scales and perspectives of analysis—will be accepted by intellectuals and ideologues in Western and Muslim societies alike. Discussing various potential anti-reactions to the transcultural approach, the article concludes that such criticism cannot erase the many forms of interpenetration that have marked and will continue to mark future relations between Islam and the West. In view of this, the transcultural approach seems to be of high relevance to understand past, present, and future processes of interaction, entanglement, and hybridization.

This book is the first documentation of Hottinger's Arabic and Islamic studies. It includes a biographical account of Hottinger, studies of his activities as a bibliographer of Arabic texts, as teacher of the Arabic language, as student of the history of Islam, and as a Protestant who used his work to engage in anti-Catholic polemics.

The current edition of Al-Jami'ah: Journal of Islamic Studies throws light on various themes related to contemporary development of Islamic religiosity with its multiple contexts. Indeed, Islam has become inspirations for many who uphold its dogma. Muslims, like any other who embrace other faiths, have participated in the creation of various traditions along human history. The first article, penned by Octavia with the title "Islamism and Democracy: a Gender Analysis on PKS's Application of Democratic Principles and Values," focuses on the internal dynamic within the Prosperous Justice Party (Partai Keadilan Sejahtera/PKS) with regard to the way in which the group has dealt with gender issues. The author detects the internal development of the PKS in which its activists responded to the gender issues in two ways. The first group remains conservative in line with Islamist ideology. The second group seems to start looking at the issue in a rather progressive way. Whereas the conservative wing displays their ideological stance, the progressive wing exhibits pragmatic step in response to the demand of the current context. After all, this shows ambiguity in the party's position pertaining to gender issues.
