HIV-1/AIDS and US Military Manpower Policy

Under a directive issued 19 Mar 1991 by the Dept of Defense (DoD), persons with human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) are excluded from recruitment, & those already in uniform may be limited in terms of assignments. This directive also details DoD policy concerning testing, safety of the blood supply, appropriate uses of information concerning those infected, efforts to control HIV-1 transmission, & arrangements pertaining to civilian authorities & employees. The status of HIV-1 infection among military personnel & DoD policy are discussed, along with issues that result from or are a consideration in the formulation of this policy. 2 Tables.
