A critique of Jurgen Habermas's "Individuation through Socialization: On Mead's Theory of Subjectivity" (in Postmetaphysical Thinking, Philosophical Essays, Hohengarten, William Mark [Tr], Cambridge: MIT Press, 1992), focusing on how George Herbert Mead's pragmatic approach provides unique insights into contemporary social theory. After reviewing Habermas's arguments that highlight both thinkers' universalist projects through the modern application of Mead's concept of individuation to either side of the postconventional ego-identity debate (eg, moral autonomy & life history), various misreadings of contextual universalist Mead are identified -- eg, Habermas's simplistic use of the "I-me" distinction, which for Mead is functional, & the problematic linking of autonomy & individuation notions.
