Fictitious election ballots, with Polish & nonethnic candidates, were used on Ur & Ru samples of Polish surname voters. The main theoretical interest was whether the candidate's ethnicity or party was the better discriminator of the Polish surname voter's choice. Results differ by Ur-Ru residence, with party related to the Ru voter's choice & ethnicity related to the Ur voter's choice. Interpretations of results emphasize the highly instit'ized nature of Ur ethnic community life, & suggest that Ur ethnics may not be acculturating pol'ay, despite evidence in the literature of their extra-pol'al acculturation. The fictitious election method is evaluated & recommended for further res into pol'al culture as it offers the possibility of 'exp'al' controls in field work. AA.
Topics of controversy leading to the formation of the International Sociological Assoc's Research Committee on Innovative Processes in Social Change are identified. The innovative processes framework -- developed to accommodate mass-communication theory, the theory & practice of technological implementation, & modernization effects in general -- was criticized by some social scientists for its Western bias; especially in developing countries, the "diffusion-of-innovation" approach in practice led to neocolonialism, increased class differentiation, a competitive ethic, & the decline of native cultural values & practices. Opponents of this approach were not against innovation per se, but rather against its specific Western form of implementation; they recommended that innovation take the form of an awakened social consciousness among peoples of underdeveloped countries. Such thinkers are adherents of a discourse-oriented action research methodology. The form of this method, & its strengths & weaknesses, are indicated. 2 Figures. D. Dunseath.
Interviews were conducted with 220 female clerical employees of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, aged 35 or older, in 1977, by telephone. The recall method was used to collect longitudinal salary data. Comparison of such data for years as far back as 1943 with recorded earnings reveals that information of past earnings is not substantially less accurate than information on current earnings. This suggests that retrospective earnings data could be a useful alternative to the expensive & time-consuming panel approach. 2 Tables. Modified HA.
T. W. Adorno outlined his philosophical method in "The Actuality of Philosophy," seven years before he joined the Frankfurt Instit, headed by M. Horkheimer. In this inaugural lecture, he introduced the most important concepts of his thought, to which he kept returning throughout his life. Adorno & Horkheimer shared common ideas, although their methodology was different. These differences are explored in detail. In The Actuality of Philosophy, Theodor W. Adorno states that modern philosophers must reject the idea that reason is enough to grasp all of reality, since the idea of being had become useless in philosophy. The problems of the meaning of "given" & of alien egos are used to illustrate the error in the notion that philosophical questioning can be separated into the questioning of the separate sciences. The goal of science is research, while the goal of philosophy is interpretation, which is not equivalent to the problem of meaning. Several suggestions regarding the maintenance of philosophy in the face of its lost claim to totality, the size of the key categories in philosophy, & the manipulation of conceptual material by philosophy are offered. ONE MEANS BY WHICH PLANNING AGENCIES MAY DETERMINE THE PUBLIC'S CONSTRUCTIVE VIEWS IS THROUGH THE USE OF QUESTIONNAIRE'S. SUCH INSTRUMENTS MUST BE SPECIALLY DESIGNED TO SERVE SPECIFIC PURPOSES. FACTORS IN SUCH DESIGN INCLUDE PILOT WORK, CHOICE OF DATA COLLECTION METHODS, ORDERING OF QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS WITH ANSWERS CHOSEN FROM A SPECIFIC SET OR AN OPEN RANGE, WORKING OF QUESTIONS, RELIABILITY OF RESPONSES, & OTHER FACTORS. EXAMPLES ARE TAKEN FROM THE USE OF QUESTIONNAIRE'S IN THE US & BRITAIN TO ILLUSTRATE ADVANTAGEOUS APPROACHES FOR QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGNERS. MODIFIED HA.
Field interviewing methods used in a study involving Federal appellate judges are described. As found in other studies, the interviewing of such an elite group tends not to be much diff from other survey res situations. Perhaps most important is the need to keep the interviews as short as possible-to avoid the potentially serious problem of undue imposition on an 'important' person's time. Evidence gathered also indicates that res'ers should make greater efforts to share their findings as soon as possible with R's. AA.
(BG)
