This paper presents a formal study of economic influence by special‐interest groups under political integration and separation. We first show that countries where more groups are organized to lobby gain from political integration on economic grounds. The reason is that a more organized country, under a political union, can affect policies in the other country to its advantage, something that a less organized country can do to a lesser extent. We then study the interaction of political integration and endogenous lobbying structure. We show that political integration affects the formation of interest groups. Moreover, if a country is more organized before political integration, this will continue to be the case afterward.

Much has been written about the processes of integration for immigrants to countries throughout Europe. However, integration is a complex, multi-faceted concept and therefore presents certain challenges. Objective integration measures such as finding a job or acquiring citizenship in one's adopted country don't always coincide with subjective measures such as a sense of political empowerment and belonging. Li Bennich-Bjorkman, in her comparative study on Estonian immigrants in Sweden and Canada, has noted that despite achieving significant outward integration in the respects mentioned, Canadian-Estonians felt a stronger sense of empowerment as citizens than did Swedish-Estonians. Clearly subjective integration and the factors contributing to it require further study. Of particular interest are countries' differing immigrant integration policies and the extent to which they can either contribute to or hinder the subjective integration process. This article advances two preliminary hypotheses. First, that more personalistic and less party-oriented electoral systems, with their resulting increased opportunities for contact between voters and politicians, strengthen feelings of empowerment among immigrant communities, and second, that liberal welfare systems are more effective in fostering subjective integration than those systems requiring a high degree of 'institutional competence' on the part of individuals. In testing those hypotheses, the authors propose to conduct a comparative study of immigration policies and their effects in Sweden, Britain, France, and Germany, focusing first on already existing data from cross-country surveys on citizenship and then examining and comparing these countries' integration processes in regard to Bosnian immigrants. This article is an analysis of the complex relations between concept of multiculturalism and modern liberal nation states, which are based on a principle of common citizenship. Consequently, in this article we question the impact of multiculturalism on the process of integration in these societies, which inevitably brings us to a contemplation of the complex relations of modern liberal democracy and nationalism. The author presents the most influential ideas of the political philosopher Brian Barry who, as a liberal egalitarian, criticized multiculturalism from the theoretical position of liberalism that seeks to provide social justice. The structure of this paper reflects his prominent ideas on this matter. In three separate chapters, the author discusses the impact of public policies with a multicultural agenda on the equal treatment of citizens, the relationship between liberalism and assimilation and liberalism, and national identity perceived as a necessary precondition for achieving integration. The last chapter of article considers the positions of other theorists on the subject of relations between a liberal state and national identity, which leads to concluding reflections of the conception of politics as a space for self-expression.

Objectives: Drawing specifically on the German case, I argue that individuals' motivations for immigration, or so-called push-pull factors, have a lasting impact beyond the decision to immigrate and, in fact, profoundly influence immigrants' political integration in the host country. Specifically, economic push-pull factors are likely to impede immigrants' political integration, whereas political push-pull factors lead immigrants to remain more interested and engaged in politics while abroad. Methods: I test these hypotheses using a combination of qualitative interviews conducted in 2002 with first-generation Turkish immigrants living in Berlin, and quantitative survey data from the 1998 German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP). Results: Results from both analyses lend considerable support to these assertions. Conclusions: The positive findings suggest that factors unique to the immigrant experience contribute to a fundamentally different understanding of immigrants' political integration from that of natives.
