With the rapid economic development from the Meiji era on, Japan has progressed from an agricultural nation at the beginnig of this century to a present‐day advanced industrialized nation. However, because of a pronounced regional concentration of industry which exists despite Japan's small size, there have come to be wide regional differences in the structure of industry. I believe that this may be witnessed in the regional differences in the distribution of industrial empolyment.

The study sets forth some estimates of regional differences in foodgrain production and availability for 1973/74 and 1977/78 and indicates what changes have taken place in 1978/79. The data examined show that regional and subregional differences are considerable. Differences in sociological and basic infrastructure conditions in different districts have influenced the distribution and application of modern agricultural methods. (DÜI-Sen)

"This edited volume examines regional differences in social structure in rural China and elaborates the characteristics, reasons and practical implications to policymaking of this. In contrast to many existing studies, the book spotlights regional disparities that stem from the varied social compositions of villages and their social relations in rural areas of Northern, Central and Southern China. Three types of rural community structures ranging from the north to the south of China are identified, including the segmented village comprised of kinship groups, that with a high degree of atomization, and the united one resting upon patrilineage based organization. The editor draws on middle-range theory, organically combining a theoretical framework of the regional variations with empirical studies based on years of fieldwork in rural China. This approach is used throughout the book to analyze topics in four aspects: family relations, social interactions, other notable social issues and rural governance. The title will appeal to scholars and students of sociology and Chinese studies, as well as general readers interested in rural Chinese society."

Abstract. In Hungary, wind erosion is one of the most serious natural hazards. Spatial and temporal variation in the factors that determine the location and intensity of wind erosion damage are not well known, nor are the regional and local sensitivities to erosion. Because of methodological challenges, no multi-factor, regional wind erosion sensitivity map is available for Hungary. The aim of this study was to develop a method to estimate the regional differences in wind erosion sensitivity and exposure in Hungary. Wind erosion sensitivity was modelled using the key factors of soil sensitivity, vegetation cover and wind erodibility as proxies. These factors were first estimated separately by factor sensitivity maps and later combined by fuzzy logic into a regional-scale wind erosion sensitivity map. Large areas were evaluated by using publicly available data sets of remotely sensed vegetation information, soil maps and meteorological data on wind speed. The resulting estimates were verified by field studies and examining the economic losses from wind erosion as compensated by the state insurance company. The spatial resolution of the resulting sensitivity map is suitable for regional applications, as identifying sensitive areas is the foundation for diverse land development control measures and implementing management activities.

Julie Dash's film Daughters of the Dust offers a starting point for an exploration of the construction of African American communal memories. Self‐consciousness about such memory making can illuminate the historically generated roles of gender, regionalism, and urbanrural differences in both popular and scholarly understandings of African American culture.This is not just an issue for African American studies, however. A number of key dilemmas in contemporary anthropology are implicated. Most prominent is the rebellion against Enlightenment‐based notions of vision and rationality, which explores the senses, the magical, the uncanny, the haunted, and the subjective.

The notion of regional disparity has received attention by government as entire regions may lag national average indictors of wellbeing and performance through lack of natural resources or access to human capital. Regional prosperity is affected by many different circumstances, including government activities and public service participation in regional labour markets. This research offers a new conceptualisation of space, place and scale in the public employment context. It examines public service jobs across regions in a particular jurisdiction and analyses how public employment compares to other jobs in each regional labour market. The research concludes that public services and public employment policies play an important role in the quantity and quality of regional job opportunities, and that public service restructuring that involves job cuts and outsourcing will affect this regional prosperity in unforeseen ways.

Relevance. In recent years, China's GDP has continued to grow, however, the regional gap in socio-economic development is still huge. It is, therefore, crucial to investigate the reasons behind regional disparities and the possible solutions to this problem. Research objective. This paper aims to examine the patterns of regional differences in mainland China after the economic reform of the 1970s.Data and methods. The study relies on the methods of comparative analysis and the data from the National Bureau of Statistics of the People's Republic of China and the Statistical Yearbook Sharing Platform as well as the information from the national media portal - Xinhua News Agency. Results. The Chinese government's application of differentiated measures, strategies and policies to different regions exacerbated the existing disparities. This paper elaborates on the future regional economic adjustments and plans and thus can be of interest to investors and business activists in China and other countries.

Background: Hepatitis B (HB) is the most serious and common viral hepatitis in China. Previous studies on HB discrimination mainly have focussed on stratified analysis, and there has been no consideration of the impact of geographical-environmental factors on HB discrimination from a spatial perspective. Objective: This study conducted a large nationwide village-based survey to test whether there were significant regional differences in HB discrimination, and to explore the relationship between different socio-economic geographical factors and HB discrimination. Methods: The sample comprised 22618 rural adults, aged over 18 years old, from villages in seven provinces, representing central, southern, and eastern coastal regions of China. Using face-to-face interviews, we surveyed participants' discrimination against HB patients or carriers. Chi-square tests were used to analyze the effects of the region on differences in proportions between three discrimination levels (low, medium, and high). A geographical detector was used to explore the relationship between different socio-economic and geographical-environmental factors and HB discrimination. Results: The distribution of HB discrimination levels across the 42 villages was statistically significant. The level of HB discrimination in the central and southern regions was generally low, and the level of HB discrimination in the eastern coastal regions was higher. Both socio-economic and geographic-environmental factors had a significant relationship with HB discrimination. Most of these relationships were not linear. Conclusions: Developing the economy and accelerating urbanization did not automatically eliminate discrimination against HB. We recommend government HB publicity and education campaigns to inform the population of HB causes and effects, and strengthen the education of students so that they can have a clear and correct understanding of HB from a young age, both of which will address HB discrimination.
