In both the US & South Africa, the rights, duties, & privileges of citizenship have been controlled by certain racial & ethnic groups who adapted the Calvinist idea of election into an ideological self-conception as a "chosen people" in order to justify their social & political dominance. However, the structure of race relations in each country has developed quite differently, particularly since WWII, when the US endorsed the ideals of universalism, assimilation, & national brotherhood, while South Africa became increasingly committed to a policy of apartheid. The ways that Anglo-Americans & Afrikaners adjusted their Calvinism in different directions, resulting in radically divergent worldviews, religious psychologies, & national identities, are explored, & attributed to different historical circumstances & experiences. It is shown how these religiously grounded conceptions of racial & political election shaped how each country dealt with the problems of managing a racially & ethnically mixed society, & how they continue to affect political & diplomatic relations between them. 42 References.
