Abstract
In this response article to Emmanuel Ngué Um's piece published in Language, Culture and Society,
I examine Ngué Um's thesis that structural linguistics has no reality in the African context, which he presents in the form of a
critique of Saussure and Western linguistics. Ngué Um imagines Saussure as a (native) speaker of an African language, who would have
refrained from theorizing languages the way he did, namely as theoretical fictions, if only he had received a formation in linguistic anthropology.
Against this, I argue that we must assess Saussurean thinking as part of the history of linguistics, i.e., in its proper
historical context, and acknowledge that linguistics as we know it is the product of Western metaphysics. Saussure just carried
forward the intellectual legacy of which he was a product. Ngué Um wishes to adapt Saussurean linguistics to the contemporary
linguistic world and make it a fit for the postcolonial and posthuman paradigms. However, the notions of langue
and parole have a precise function in Saussure's theorizing, and it is questionable whether a
decolonial linguistics should approach the African linguistic experience based on any of the Western
metaphysical concepts. Doing so will, arguably, lead to a watered-down version of metaphysics and to a not fully emancipated southern
linguistic theory.

Résumé Le recensement classique selon les méthodes employées dans les pays développés monogamiques ne permet pas de rendre compte des caractéristiques de populations en régime tribal ou se rapprochant de ce régime. La revue « Population » a donné, à plusieurs reprises, les résultats d'études sur des populations noires, d'Afrique ou d'Amérique du Sud (1). Le R. P. Martin, chargé de recherches au ? N. R .S., donne ici le résultat de ses recherches sur les Serer et les Wolof au Sénégal et en tire des conséquences sur leur évolution probable.

"Men are seldom a topic of concern in migration research as gendered subjects who experience the implications of social justice, for instance in aspects relating to lives in their families such as fairness of representation, consequences of material redistribution, and management of emotions. Economic migrants in particular, who are seen as matching the rote of breadwinners and confirming the status of dominant patriarchal men, are a particularly underrated case. Using the experiences of Wolof men who emigrate from Senegal to become the main providers for their families, this chapter questions this assumption by drawing insights from a theorization on 'transnational families', 'Intersectionality' and 'masculinity' as developed within migration and gender studies. The chapter discusses how male gender roles become interlocked with other categories, as asymmetries (be they real or perceived) intervene between the migrant and the stay-behind, and as geographic distance forces them to revisit the propriety of arrangements that enable them to enact their gendered responsibility within families. Caught between pressures deriving from their economic and moral obligations towards family and kin on the one hand, and Personal aspirations of fitting the part of successful men on the other, the ethnographic research presented in this chapter shows that migrants engage in an emotional journey that may challenge, rather than confirm, their expectations of 'hegemonic' masculinity." Dissertação apresentada para cumprimento dos requisitos necessários à obtenção do grau de Mestre em Terminologia e Gestão da Informação de Especialidade ; Ce présent travail de recherche se veut de proposer un modèle de base de données terminologique bilingue (français - wolof) dans le domaine du droit constitutionnel permettant de mettre sur place un outil précieux à la traduction et à la rédaction technique. Ce travail est motivé par l'inexistence de ressources terminologiques en langue wolof pouvant répondre aux besoins de certains acteurs socioprofessionnels tels que les traducteurs, les rédacteurs techniques, les juristes, les étudiants, voire même les hommes politiques, etc. Sur la base d'une étude contrastive des deux versions de la Constitution sénégalaise, nous focalisons notre réflexion sur la description et sur l'établissement des équivalences linguistique et conceptuelle des termes du droit constitutionnel entre langue française et wolof.
