This book introduces some emerging functional foods that are natural resources with tremendous promise as nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. The author considers biodiversity and bioprospecting as a response to food security issues, drug-resistance, nutrition-poor diets and other problems, exploring the prospects of several under-utilized nutrients and bioactive repositories. Readers will discover biochemical makeups, validated health benefits, explanations of underlying mechanisms, hurdles in the path of popularity and promotion strategies. Chapters explore particular plants, seeds and fruits including the strawberry guava, opuntia fruits, the Carissa genus, grape seeds, quinoa and the milk thistle (Silybum), amongst others. They are considered as food sources where possible and from the perspective of the roles they can play in complementary and alternative medicine, such as in wound healing, antimicrobial activity, gastroprotective activity in treatment of cancers and as natural antioxidant sources. This rich compilation holds plausible solutions to a range of current issues and it endorses the much-needed goal of sustainability in terms of diet and drugs. It paves the path for further research and development on hitherto obscure natural resources. Scientists working in the area of food development, phytochemical and antioxidant analysis, bioprospecting of low-profile foods and in complementary and alternative medicine will find this work particularly valuable. It will also be of interest to the general reader with an interest in food science, food security, phytochemicals and functional food studies
"The present book focuses on health care disparities. ... The United States has a wonderful health care system, especially in terms of its capabilities. But it is not equally available to all. It is an expensive system and highly fragmented. Although it works for many of us, it does not work for all."--Preface

Heterogeneously catalyzed selective oxidations of alcohols is a highly topical field. The first chapter of this brief describes the importance of the selective oxidation of alcohols and advantages of heterogeneous catalysts over conventional catalysts, use of environmentally benign oxidants, and the design of selective catalysts by tailoring of polyoxometalates at the molecular level. Chapter 2 describes synthesis, characterization 11-molybdophosphate based supported materials and their use as heterogeneous catalysts for oxidation of alcohols with molecular oxygen under solvent free mild reaction condition. ZrO2, Al2O3, MCM-41 and zeolite H? were used as supports. Chapter 3 describes synthesis, characterization of transition metals (Mn, Co, Ni, Cu)- substituted phosphomolybdates and their use as heterogeneous catalysts for oxidation of alcohols with molecular oxygen under solvent free mild reaction condition. Chapter 4 describes conclusive remarks for present catalytic systems. Anjali Uday Patel received her Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Inorganic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry in 1986 from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Vadodara, Gujarat, India and completed her Ph.D. in 1993 in the same institution. From 1993 to 1994 Dr. Patel completed her Post-Doctorate at the Institut de Recherches sur la Catalyse (IRC), Le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Lyon, France. Since 1997, she has joined the Department of Chemistry at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda where she is presently working as an Associate Professor. She teaches solid state chemistry, catalytic materials and catalysis to postgraduate students and leads a research group focusing on tailoring of new catalytic materials based on heteropolyacids/polyoxometalates, lacunary as well as transition metal substituted polyoxometalates and their applications for organic transformations such as esterification, alkylation, acylation, oxidation, Heck coupling, and bio-diesel production. She has published 60 papers in various international journals and has discovered one process (US 7692047 B2) and two catalysts (Indian patents filed: 2078/MUM/2010 and 3280/MUM/2010) patents.

The influence of culture on mental illness has been the subject of considerable academic investigation and debate in recent years. This debate has provoked concerns about the validity and reliability of older methodologies which emphasised either universal characteristics of disorders which were heavily biased towards Euro-American systems, or the culturally relativist approach which saw psychological disorders as products largely of their own culture. The ""new"" cross-cultural psychiatry proposed that the integration of ethnographic and epidemiological techniques be required to enable a cult
Contact between cultures has been understood in various ways and this particular volume considers the European cultural, social, scientific, philosophical and political contexts framing encounter. All of the essays thus look at the different ways in which individuals and institutions work these contexts into their representations of contact settings. In Part 1, the conventional stance is adopted where encounter is understood as taking place elsewhere and not on European soil. The chapters ex...
To understand today's Arab thinking, you need to go back to the beginnings of modernity: the nahdah or Arab renaissance of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Abdulrazzak Patel enhances our understanding of the nahdah and its intellectuals, looking back to its origins in the 1700s and taking into account important internal factors alongside external forces. He explores the key factors that contributed to the rise and development of the nahdah, he introduces the humanist movement of the period that was the driving force behind much of the linguistic, literary and educational activity. Drawing on intellectual history, literary history and postcolonial studies, he argues that the nahdah was the product of native development and foreign assistance and that nahdah reformist thought was hybrid in nature. Overall, this study highlights the complexity of the movement and offers a more pluralist history of the period
The internationalization of business via the process of globalization has brought issues of culture to the forefront of management thinking. Although culture is by no means a new area of study in business schools, it remains frustratingly elusive and misunderstood. This textbook gives business students - or future managers - an understanding of the multitude of frameworks available to them to make sense of the cultural contexts they will encounter in their managerial careers. Starting from a general introduction to 'culture' and its role in businesses, Taran Patel encourages readers t.
