As a field of study, international political economy (IPE) suffers from a significant historical deficit. Where this deficit is recognized, it is most commonly addressed by adding "historical context" to the inquiry, as in the injunction to place globalization into its proper historical context. While this is a useful & necessary first step, it does not adequately address the problem of "historicizing" IPE. To genuinely historicize IPE, one must first acknowledge the element of reflection that infuses each level of social inquiry, from how the object of investigation is framed & explored to how agency is considered in relation to particular issues. This means going beyond context & actors to ask what constitutes the form of knowledge appropriate to uncovering & remaking the social world. Historicizing IPE, in other words, demands that one interrogate their own aims & purposes as openly as they explore the subject under study. 81 References. Adapted from the source document.

Exploring the diverse ways that corporations affect the practices and structures of the global political economy, this innovative work addresses three fundamental questions: How can the corporation be most usefully conceptualized within the field of IPE? Does global governance succeed in constraining the power of multinational corporations? To what extent has the movement for corporate social responsibility been fruitful? The authors' rich, detailed contributions covering topics ranging from environmental governance to control of the Internet, from the evolution of legal structures to issues of outsourcing cogently reestablishes the study of the corporation as a central concern for IPE
