Two papers described the domestic and foreign forces that influence developments in Southern Africa, one paper explained the policy of the ANC. The second and third days of the conference treated in depth four topics crucial to the situation in South Africa and to its future development. The study deals with the social and economic development of certain of the non-agricultural rural groups of coastal Orissa in the last few decades. An investigation of how these groups have been affected by the capitalist penetration of the Indian rural economy is aimed at. The focus is on how, in the complex netwok of social amd economic relations of the village, the positions of these groups have been altered. The study of non-agrarian groups is based on a general outline of the most important social relations at the village level, emphasising the positions of the most powerful agrarian groups and of the higher castes; most of the important social relations of the non-agricultural groups revolve around these two groups. Within this context the study concentrates on the Viswakarma caste of coastal Orissa. Traditionally, the Viswakarmas are village blacksmiths and carpenters. - The report is one result of a research project carried out by the author at Centre for Development Research 1988-1992: "Artisans in Rural India: Changes in Employment Structure and Income Earning Opportunities. A case study from rural Orissa". (Publication)

This article examines the role of and policies towards the informal sector in Kenya and presents the nature and dynamics of the rural informal sector. The rural nonfarm sector is approached from two angles: first, a geographical point of departure is taken, ie. analyzing the spatial organization of nonfarm enterprises; second, portraits of the enterprises and their owners, as individual entities and tradewise, are sketched. The author carried out a field survey in the middle of 1988 at four locations in three districts, namely Kericho, Kakamega and Kisii Districts

The present study is built on the hypothesis that migration of the heads of household has more far-reaching implications than the migration of other family members, mainly due to the heads' obligation to cater for the rural family and their need to reproduce the households' right to access to land. The study focuses on the migration pattern which developed in and around six villages in the Musami ward, Murewa-Kubatana district in Mashonaland East province. The choice of village has been guided by the abundant material on former migration in this area

(DÜI-Xyl)

It is often claimed that the choice of a "state-farm line" was forced upon the Mozambican Government by the disruption of production occurring in the wake of the Portuguese exodus. While there is some truth in this, this paper will seek to show that the decision also rested on certain assumptions about what crops should be given priority and upon a particularly oversimplified conception of agricultural "modernization". The paper will also consider briefly some of the effects of centralized physical planning in exacerbating the problems
