This English-language volume is an edited collection of articles from the 2010 Chinese-language volume of the Green Book of Population and Labor. It examines recent developments in the Chinese demographic transition and its implications, especially for the labor market.

Abstract
A major mark of the progress of human society is its transition from the production of things in space to the production of space itself. Oral narrative covers a certain range of space with sound, and physical spaces such as theaters, cinemas, and concert halls accommodate various forms of narrative communication. Drama was the most popular form of mass communication in the pre-industrial age, and its performance required a "sound wall" around the theater to keep people focused. Comment and discussion were both significant forms of narrative consumption. Some consumers who paid more attention to "being seen" even regarded the communication arena as a social platform. In present times, commentary subtitles (Danmaku in Japanese) pop up on computer screens from time to time to make consumers feel as if they are chatting with people while watching. "Chatting" in social media groups also belongs to interaction in virtual space. Surround sound in the cinema wraps the audience and screen into a unifying auditory space, blurring or even eliminating the boundaries between them. Narrative has been an act of producing acoustic space from the very beginning. Nowadays, people adopt more abundant narrative means yet still rely on the imitation of auditory communication.

The year 2018 marks 40 years of reform and development in China (1978–2018). This commemorative book assembles some of the world's most prominent scholars on the Chinese economy to reflect on what has been achieved as a result of the economic reform programs, and to draw out the key lessons that have been learned by the model of growth and development in China over the preceding four decades. This book explores what has happened in the transformation of the Chinese economy in the past 40 years for China itself, as well as for the rest of the world, and discusses the implications of what will happen next in the context of China's new reform agenda. Focusing on the long-term development strategy amid various old and new challenges that face the economy, this book sets the scene for what the world can expect in China's fifth decade of reform and development. A key feature of this book is its comprehensive coverage of the key issues involved in China's economic reform and development. Included are discussions of China's 40 years of reform and development in a global perspective; the political economy of economic transformation; the progress of marketisation and changes in market-compatible institutions; the reform program for state-owned enterprises; the financial sector and fiscal system reform, and its foreign exchange system reform; the progress and challenges in economic rebalancing; and the continuing process of China's global integration. This book further documents and analyses the development experiences including China's large scale of migration and urbanisation, the demographic structural changes, the private sector development, income distribution, land reform and regional development, agricultural development, and energy and climate change policies.

AbstractThis article examines the role of reform in maintaining economic growth in the circumstances in which work‐age is declining more rapidly than total population. Traditional factor‐driven growth can still contribute if reform increases labour force participation, most significantly through easing restrictions on rural–urban migration through reform of the household registration system and other means. The other potential contributor to growth in the new era is reform to raise productivity. This requires more fundamental institutional change, which depends on clear visions of the framework for a modern market economy, encompassing the rule of law and stronger property rights.

AbstractWith the reduction of the working‐age population and the increase of the population dependency ratio as the main indicators of the diminishing demographic dividend, China's potential growth rate is decreasing. Our results suggest that the demographic dividend contributed to nearly one fourth of the economic growth in China in the past three decades, while total factor productive growth explains another third and capital accumulation explaining the remaining growth (nearly half). China's potential growth rate will continue to slow—it was nearly 10 per cent during 1980–2010 but 6.65 per cent on average during 2016–2020—because of the diminishing demographic dividend, but reform measures are conductive to clearing the institutional barriers to the supply of factors and productivity, buffering the potential growth rate. The aggregate reform dividend could reach to 1–2 per cent on average during 2016–2050.
