What challenges do researchers face when surveying immigrant populations and ethnic minorities? What are the best ways to ensure that general population surveys adequately represent minority groups? The first book to systematically address these questions, this volume analyzes more than a dozen surveys conducted in eight Western countries on topics ranging from politics to health. These case studies-which include local and national surveys with various levels of funding-offer valuable lessons about dealing with a range of methodological challenges.

"What are the special problems involved in surveying immigrant populations and ethnic minorities? How can we ensure adequate representation of these growing groups in general population surveys? This book is the first to address these challenges in a systematic way. Experiences from eight Western countries, involving more than a dozen surveys, are used to explore difficulties in designing these types of surveys and some of the choices made to deal with them. The rich array of cases covered gives rise to valuable lessons, from local and national surveys, from well-funded surveys and those with limited means, and on a wide variety of topics ranging from politics to health"--Provided by publisher

Technocratic governments and similar systems that give more voice to experts in the decision-making process are one of the potential alternatives to traditional representative party government. These alternatives have become increasingly popular, especially in countries where strong political disaffection and previous favourable pro-expert attitudes exist simultaneously. The Spanish case is one of these settings, with the emergence of a political party, Ciudadanos (Citizens), that represents these ideas. This article contributes to the understanding of public opinion support for an expert government, its main motives, and social supports. We claim that experts are not so much a decision-making alternative as they are a desired piece of the decision-making process. Support for a more significant role for experts comes especially from those that credit them with ample technical capacities, but most citizens want them to work as a piece of representative government, not as an alternative to it. The article combines two types of evidence: A survey of a representative sample of the population, including innovative questions about support to expert governments, and 10 focus groups that allow a more in-depth comprehension of the support (and criticism) of an increased role for experts. The results provide a nuanced picture of the types of expert involvement sought and their respective social support.

We are witnessing a rediscovery of place through new and imaginative formulae, as a result of the shift in paradigm led by civil society which understands political action differently. A civil society that has no difficulty acknowledging the importance of tying emotions to places, landscapes and, generally speaking, management of the public space. The rural world is seeing the emergence of new initiatives and attitudes, new values, new forms of social organisation that in some cases arise almost from nowhere and, in other cases, have been reinforced precisely on account of the economic, social and cultural catastrophe brought about by the tired references to the economic crisis ; Nous assistons à une redécouverte du lieu à travers des formules nouvelles et imaginatives, fruits d'un changement de paradigme porté par une société civile qui appréhende l'action politique d'une autre façon. The present text outlines the genesis and evolution of the modern appreciation of the landscape in Catalonia, from the mid 19th century to the present. In order to better understand this evolution, four stages are established. The first stage, which stretches from the end of the 19th century to the Spanish Civil War, is of great importance for its seminal nature and the close connection between the cultural and symbolic appreciation of the landscape and the origins of Catalanist thought. The second refers to the Franco period, marked by the practical disappearance of any interpretation of the landscape linked to political Catalanism. The third stage spans from the first years of democracy until the breakdown of constitutional consensus at the beginning of the 21st century, and the fourth and current phase is closely related to the paradigm shift introduced by a civil society that vindicates, among other rights, that of self-determination. The article shows that, in one way or another, the appreciation of the landscape in Catalonia has always had a connotation of identity issues and reassertion of a distinct and differentiated personality, and has always been conceived as the result of a long and distant process of historicity of territory and territorialisation of history ; El presente texto esboza la génesis y la evolución de la valoración moderna del paisaje en Cataluña, desde mediados del siglo XIX hasta el presente.
