A masterwork of feminist ideology, brilliantly exposing pornography as the antithesis of free expression and the enemy of liberty In this powerful and devastating critique, poet, philosopher, and feminist Susan Griffin exposes the inherent psychological horrors of pornography. Griffin argues that, rather than encouraging expression, pornographic images and the philosophies that support them actually stifle freedoms through the dehumanization, subjugation, and degradation of female subjects. The pornographic mindset, Griffin contends, is akin to racism in that it causes dangerous schisms in soc

Ethics appears early in the life of a culture. It is not the creation of philosophers. Many philosophers today think that their job is to take the ethics of their society in hand, analyse it into parts, purge the bad ideas, and organize the good into a systematic moral theory. The philosophers' ethics that results is likely to be very different from the culture's raw ethics and, they think, being better, should replace it. But few of us, even among philosophers, settle real-life moral questions by consulting the Categorical Imperative or the Principle of Utility, largely because, if we do, we often do not trust the outcome or cannot even reliably enough decide what it is. By contrast, James Griffin explores the question what philosophers can reasonably expect to contribute to normative ethics or to the ethics of a culture. Griffin argues that moral philosophers must tailor their work to what ordinary humans' motivational capabilities, and he offers a new account of moral deliberation

"This volume seeks to offer a critical, innovative and empirically driven interrogation of the international political economy of cultures of production and consumption in Western market societies, investigating the reproduction of Western popular and commercial culture (including its products and representations) alongside analysis of representations of and attitudes towards feminism in contemporary Western societies. Many scholars have examined the marginalisation of feminist concerns in contemporary Western societies, argued that we now live in a post-feminist age, or shown how feminist concerns have been appropriated and absorbed by institutions that contribute to the perpetuation of gender inequalities. Death of Feminism? furthers this debate by focusing on how these very arguments depend upon a cultural political economy that has gendered understandings of everyday life, gendered patterns of consumption, and gendered predominant forms of commercial capitalism that circulate at the global level. This book will provide significant insight into how cultural artefacts of the past decade in the UK, US, and Australia have made use of gendered representations for the purposes of promoting specific forms of consumption, how these artefacts can be (and have been) understood as gendered, and the political consequences of these representations and understandings. Written in an accessible fashion, analysing a broad range of commercial and popular culture artefacts (including advertising, radio, television, film and online media) and including primary data from interviews and focus groups, this work will of use to students and scholars of IR, IPE, gender, cultural and media studies"--
"While substantial advances have been made in the L&D profession over the last decade, evaluation remains by far the weakest part of the L&D cycle. Most organizations wish to evaluate the impact of their investment in training, but few do it well and the lack of effective methods is one of the key barriers.Complete Training Evaluation addresses these issues by providing practitioner friendly but academically robust information and guidance on how to evaluate all forms of learning and development. It draws on the author's own multidisciplinary research along with his practical experience of working with private and public sector organizations carrying out evaluation. The book provides practitioners with accessible "how-to" knowledge and tools to undertake evaluations of both formal and informal learning.Full of case studies and practical examples of application of methods and insights, Complete Training Evaluation equips practitioners with a range of approaches that can be used depending on the training program, capacity and capability"--
It was one of the most significant developments of the post-war era: China finally abandoning its close relationship with the Soviet Union to begin detente with the USA. Astonishingly, the man who helped make it happen was a British aristocrat, Ivor Montagu, a Soviet spy who knew Stalin and dined with Trotsky. Even more remarkably, the means to this rapprochement was table tennis, a sport loved by both Chairman Mao and Montagu. For years, Montagu had lived a dual life, working to spread communism and also table tennis around the world. Surprisingly, the two strands of his career would come together in an event of global significance. Nicholas Griffin weaves a compelling story to reveal the background to the famous occasion in 1971, when the USA's Glenn Cowan, a 19-year-old hippie, befriended China's world champion Zhuang Zedong, who was imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution. Within days, the Americans would be playing the Chinese in front of 18,000 fans in Beijing, with the whole world watching. It was the beginning of a thaw in Sino-US relations that forced the Soviets into a crippling arms race that acted as a catalyst to pressuring them into errors that would draw the Cold War to an end. Sometimes sport truly can have the biggest consequences
"Education in Indigenous, Nomadic and Travelling Communities provides a thorough examination of up-to-date case studies of educational provision to travelling communities and indigenous people in their homeland or in host countries. Education is usually under-utilised during phases of transition. In many instances, indigenous groups and travelling people, including nomads, do not have educational opportunities equal to that of their settled counterpart-citizens of their country resulting in early school leaving, high school drop-out rates, low school attendance and low success rates resulting in such groups beginning their working life at an early age and finding difficulty penetrating the formal employment arena. In this volume international researchers analyse the internal and external factors affecting educational provision to travelling, nomadic and indigenous groups. Global case studies including the Roma people in Europe; indigenous groups in Malaysia; the nomadic tribes of Afghanistan as well as the Amazonian Indians of Latin America enable a comparative examination of the issues"--
This Open Access book looks at Olympiodorus (AD c. 500–570), possibly the last non-Christian teacher of philosophy in Alexandria, who delivered these lectures as an introduction to Plato with a biography. For us, they can serve as an accessible introduction to late Neoplatonism. Olympiodorus locates the First Alcibiades at the start of the curriculum on Plato, because it is about self-knowledge. His pupils are beginners, able to approach the hierarchy of philosophical virtues, like the aristocratic playboy Alcibiades. Alcibiades needs to know himself, at least as an individual with particular actions, before he can reach the virtues of mere civic interaction. As Olympiodorus addresses mainly Christian students, he tells them that the different words they use are often symbols of truths shared between their faiths. 9/11 and its aftermath demonstrate the urgent need for political scientists and historians to unravel the tangled relationship of secular ideologies and organized religions to political fanaticism. This major new volume uses a series of case studies by world experts to further our understanding of these complex issues. They examine the connections between fascism, political religion and totalitarianism by exploring two inter-war fascist regimes, two abortive European movements, and two post-war American extreme right-wing movements with contrasting religious components.<
