The possibilities for developing the poet Douglas Dunn's archive (which includes the drafts and manuscripts for his collection Elegies, dealing with the terminal illness and death of the poet's wife from cancer) for therapeutic benefit are explored by an English lecturer (C.J.) and a palliative care practitioner (C.M.). This has led us to explore the potential benefit of this resource for health practitioners working with those affected by cancer and other life-limiting conditions. This article offers a "written conversation" (an acknowledged oxymoron of genre) about working with the themes of death and loss: a conversation which includes Douglas Dunn, who was not actually there. We reflect on the value of this "confabulation" as methodological inquiry, and its potential influence on practice. Thus, an example of "creative writing" (the confabulation) becomes a piece of research into methodology regarding the use of "creative writing" resources (the poetry archive) in palliative health care.

This article looks at the hidden history of 'popular social work'. It suggests that suspicion of state-directed social welfare and social work has a long history, that state-directed welfare is rarely unconditional and non-stigmatising, but that these values are enshrined and embedded within popular social work, which is often rooted in social movement activity. The article argues that we need to see social work as a much more contested activity, shaped by politics and that we need to rediscover the history of popular social work, which has been ignored within most professional histories.

For several years a noticeable weakness in business games has been the absence of strong organizational and leadership functions. Organization often tends to be that of a democratic committee management, while leadership, if present, tends to that of an emerging informal leader1 (p. 183). Neither is very realistic measured by corporate activities.

AbstractThis introduction to the inaugural issue ofAsiascape: Digital Asiareviews the debates about the impact that digital media have on culture, society, economics, and politics. The ubiquity of digital technology in various parts of the world has prompted questions about whether the ability to connect on a near-global scale with potentially billions of users has an emancipatory or even democratizing effect. In other words: are personal computers, smartphones, tablet computers, mobile gaming devices, and the digital infrastructure of the Internet 'liberation technologies'? This introduction examines arguments by both optimists and pessimists, and argues that in order to overcome simple dichotomies in the study of digital media, we need to study such media in the diverse social and historical contexts in which they are situated. The review further showcases the five research papers that comprise this special issue ofAsiascape: Digital Asia, each of which provides an insightful study of the diverse ways in whichicthave been deployed by citizens in different Asian contexts to profoundly shaped social, cultural, and political processes. What the discussion shows, is the need for academics to rethink how they can fruitfully explore the challenges and opportunities that digital media present in various contexts, and how they can contribute innovative theories, useful approaches, and much needed 'reality checks' to ongoing public discourse.
