Das Historische Seminar der Universität Tübingen hat unter Leitung von Bernhard Mann ein 'Handbuch der Mitglieder des preußischen Abgeordnetenhauses 1867-1918' mit den wichtigsten biographischen und politischen Daten der Abgeordneten erarbeitet. Es handelt sich dabei um ein 'Nebenprodukt' von Studien des Projektleiters zur Geschichte des preußischen Landtags im Kaiserreich, bei denen sich das Fehlen eines zuverlässigen und leicht greifbaren biographischen Nachschlagewerks als gravierender Mangel herausgestellt hatte. Der Beitrag zeigt, in welcher Weise das 'Tübinger System von Textverarbeitungs-Programmen' (TUSTEP) bei der Herstellung des Handbuches genutzt wurde, um die Auswertung von Quellen, die Ergänzung und Korrektur der Daten und schließlich die Aufbereitung des Datensatzes für die Publikation effektiver zu bewältigen. TUSTEP wurde zwar für den literaturwissenschaftlichen Bereich entwickelt, speziell für Texteditionen, wegen seines modularen, flexiblen Charakters kann es aber viele Anwendungsbereiche abdecken und ist ohne größere EDV-Kenntnisse anwendbar. Durante décadas, la historia militar se ha mantenido apartada de las principales corrientes históricas y se convirtió básicamente en un reducto para los propios militares y eruditos que no compartían los avances historiográficos recientes y prolongaban la tradición positivista alemana. Sin embargo, en las últimas décadas la historia militar ha establecido un fructífero diálogo no sólo con escuelas como la historia social, la historia de la vida cotidiana, la historia oral y similares, sino también con otras ciencias como la sociología o la psicología. La evolución de la historia militar es puesta en relación con la de la mirada de la sociedad alemana hacia su conflictivo pasado y, en particular, las implicaciones de experiencias históricas como la Segunda Guerra Mundial o el Holocausto.

This open access book brings together contributions from an internationally diverse group of scholars to celebrate Taner Akçam's role as the first Turkish intellectual to publicly recognize the Armenian Genocide. As a researcher, lecturer, and mentor to a new generation of scholars, Akçam has led the effort to utilize previously unknown, ignored, or under-studied sources, whether in Turkish, Armenian, German, or other languages, thus immeasurably expanding and deepening the scholarly project of documenting and analyzing the Armenian Genocide.

Ob Menschen in der Lage sind, das gegenseitige Töten abzuschaffen, ist eine alte Frage. Sie wurde und wird kontrovers diskutiert, und selbst unter Friedenswissenschaftlern ist durchaus umstritten, ob es überhaupt sinnvoll ist, sie zu stellen. Vor dem Hintergrund der Eskalation des Tötens in zwei verheerenden Weltkriegen und angesichts zahlreicher weiterer Kriege und Bürgerkriege, Massaker und Völkermorde war und ist diese Frage gleichwohl Ausgangspunkt und Triebkraft vielfältiger Diskurse in Politik, Gesellschaft, Kunst und Wissenschaft. Erstaunlicherweise jedoch hat das massenhafte Töten selbst, also jene Handlung, die den Kern von Kriegen und Genoziden bildet, lange Zeit weder die Forschung noch die Öffentlichkeit nachhaltig beschäftigt. In den Darstellungen von Kriegen und Genoziden wird das Töten vorzugsweise indirekt zur Sprache gebracht, man redet über Ursachen und Folgen des Tötens, aber das Töten selbst verschwindet hinter generalisierenden und abstrahierenden Formulierungen. In diesem Band untersuchen Historiker, Juristen, Politologen, Soziologen, Psychologen, Literaturwissenschaftler und Journalisten das massenhafte Tötungshandeln - das aktive Töten also, nicht nur den erlittenen Tod - in den Kriegen und Genoziden des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Beiträge fragen nach den Praktiken und sozialen Zusammenhängen des Tötens, nach gesellschaftlich verankerten Tötungshemungen und danach, wie diese Hemmungen überwunden werden, und sie beschäftigen sich damit, wie über das massenhafte Töten öffentlich und privat geredet oder wie es beschwiegen wurde. Die Reihe Frieden und Krieg - Beiträge zur Historischen Friedensforschung dokumentiert die Ergebnisse der wissenschaftlichen Tagungen des Arbeitskreises Historische Friedensforschung. We present the submatrix method, a highly parallelizable method for the approximate calculation of inverse p-th roots of large sparse symmetric matrices which are required in different scientific applications. Following the idea of Approximate Computing, we allow imprecision in the final result in order to utilize the sparsity of the input matrix and to allow massively parallel execution. For an n x n matrix, the proposed algorithm allows to distribute the calculations over n nodes with only little communication overhead. The result matrix exhibits the same sparsity pattern as the input matrix, allowing for efficient reuse of allocated data structures. We evaluate the algorithm with respect to the error that it introduces into calculated results, as well as its performance and scalability. We demonstrate that the error is relatively limited for well-conditioned matrices and that results are still valuable for error-resilient applications like preconditioning even for ill-conditioned matrices. We discuss the execution time and scaling of the algorithm on a theoretical level and present a distributed implementation of the algorithm using MPI and OpenMP.
