The arguments in the debate between dependency theories of Canadian political economy & its critique by orthodox Marxist theorists are discussed. Dependency theory is presented, portraying Canadian economic development as protected & shaped by British & US imperialism, & as resulting in the overdevelopment of raw material industries, the underdevelopment of secondary & tertiary, & the development of nationalism & socialism. The key elements of the orthodox Marxist argument against dependency theory are discussed: (1) the contradictions of dependency & nationalism; (2) Canada's class structure vs peripheral economy; & (3) the origins of industrialization in Canada. Weaknesses of the Marxist critique are discussed, including oversimplified class analysis & lack of a comprehensive break with dependency. State capital & internationalization approaches to political economy are presented to correct these weaknesses. The key elements of Nikolai Bukharin's economic thought are discussed (eg, see Imperialism and World Economy, New York: Monthly Review Press, 1973) & applied to the debate over Canadian political economy.
