It is argued that the Council of Arab Economic Unity and the Arab Common Market have disappointed their members. As a result three new groups have emerged since the beginning of this decade: the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (1981), the Arab Cooperation Council (1989), and the Arab Maghrib Union (1989). The EC has been in all of the three new markets both an inspiration and a challenge. (DÜI-Hns)

The purpose of this work is to offer an initial approach to the distinctive features of some of the specific types of forest-related conflicts in Costa Rica. This takes place during the 'golden era' of the capitalist modernization driven by the Costa Rican liberal governments, and the resulting consolidation of a liberal environmental regime seeking to 'modernize' the country's socio-environmental relations, under the unquestionable conviction of a capitalist 'progress'. More specifically, the study intends to dimension the action framework of the individuals who filed their complaints before the judicial courts concerning forests and their productions, on the assumption that the strategies they had developed to succeed in such disputes stemmed from a wide diversity of conceptions, representations, valuations, attitudes, and interests surrounding the forests.
