AbstractWe developed a simulation model for quantifying the spatio‐temporal distribution of contaminants (e.g., xenobiotics) and assessing the risk of exposed populations at the landscape level. The model is a spatio‐temporal exposure‐hazard model based on (i) tools of stochastic geometry (marked polygon and point processes) for structuring the landscape and describing the exposed individuals, (ii) a dispersal kernel describing the dissemination of contaminants from polygon sources, and (iii) an (eco)toxicological equation describing the toxicokinetics and dynamics of contaminants in affected individuals. The model was implemented in the briskaR package (biological risk assessment with R) of the R software. This article presents the model background, the use of the package in an illustrative example, namely, the effect of genetically modified maize pollen on nontarget Lepidoptera, and typical comparisons of landscape configurations that can be carried out with our model (different configurations lead to different mortality rates in the treated example). In real case studies, parameters and parametric functions encountered in the model will have to be precisely specified to obtain realistic measures of risk and impact and accurate comparisons of landscape configurations. Our modeling framework could be applied to study other risks related to agriculture, for instance, pathogen spread in crops or livestock, and could be adapted to cope with other hazards such as toxic emissions from industrial areas having health effects on surrounding populations. Moreover, the R package has the potential to help risk managers in running quantitative risk assessments and testing management strategies.

Introduction. Since its arrival in Senegal in 2004, Bactrocera invadens (Diptera Tephritidae) synonymized with Bactrocera dorsalis has caused much economic damage in mango crops. Effective and efficient control activities against B. invadens were necessary in order to continue mango production, and biological control measures were envisaged. In such conditions, the government of Senegal allowed the Asian parasitoid Fopius arisanus to be released in some orchards around Ziguinchor. Materials and methods. The dynamics of fruit fly species was studied with lure traps (methyl eugenol and terpinyl acetate with Dichlorvos). Mango fruit were sampled from the control orchard and orchards with released F. arisanus, to compare the differences in tephritid infestation. Results and discussion. The levels of B. invadens populations were 1.6−2.5 times higher in the control than in orchards where F. arisanus was released. The fruit were also 5–6 times more infested in the control orchard than in those that received F. arisanus. Between May and July 2012 the majority of the pupae (92%) collected from fruit samples developed into adult flies, while only 39% of the pupae transformed to adults between October and December after effective action of the parasitoids. In both orchard treatments, the level of native fruit fly populations was about the same. Wild fruit were infested mostly by Ceratitis cosyra, from which were reared native parasitoids such as Fopius caudatus, F. silvestrii, F. desideratus, Diachasmimorpha fullawayi, D. carinata, Psyttalia cosyrae, and P. concolor. In contrast with Mangifera indica, Citrus spp., Anacardium occidentale, Psidium guayava, Saba senegalensis, and Landolphia heudelotii were mainly infested by B. invadens which showed parasitism by F. arisanus. Pteromalidae and Eulophidae were also found from the pest fly pupae. Killer flies (Diptera: Muscidae) such as Coenosia attenuata Stein, C. atra Meigen and C. tigrina Fabricius emerged from the fruit samples. Conclusion. Sanitation against fruit flies in Casamance should take into account the conservation of natural enemies such as parasitoids and predators for an effective biological control of tephritids.

Entre 2005 et 2008, une enquête de caractérisation des bassins et des systèmes de production à activité fruitière a été conduite auprès d'un échantillon de 480 exploitations « fruitières » choisies au hasard, soit 175 au Cameroun, 91 en RCA et 163 au Tchad. Sept (7) espèces fruitières ont été répertoriées, comptant 106 085 arbres dont des manguiers (43,33 %), des bananiers (26,75 %), des agrumes (9,17 %), des avocatiers (8,52 %), des goyaviers (6,48 %), des anacardiers (3,6 %) et des papayers (2,14 %). Les variétés introduites par la recherche sont peu présentes. Quatre bassins fruitiers ont été identifiés dont deux sont transfrontaliers au Cameroun et au Tchad et les deux autres sont spécifiques à la République centrafricaine et au plateau de l'Adamaoua (Cameroun). Le premier type d'exploitation est un système dominé par les vivriers avec des surfaces inférieures à 1 ha, les cultures fruitières représentent jusqu'à 20 % de la marge brute totale (MBT), qui annuellement ne dépasse pas 200 000 F CFA par exploitation. Le second type d'exploitation avec des surfaces comprises entre 1 et 5 ha avec le coton comme culture dominante dégage une marge brute (MB) verger faible (moins de 100 000 F CFA/actif/an) et dont la MBT ne dépasse pas 300 000 F CFA. Le troisième type regroupe les exploitations de surface plus importante (5 à 10 ha) basé sur l'arboriculture (80 %) et la MBT annuelle dégagée est comprise entre 300 000 et 500 000 F CFA. Le type 4 regroupe les exploitations industrielles de plus de 20 à 40 ha mis en œuvre par des élites urbaines. Les MB verger représentent plus de 80 % de la MBT (600 000 à 2 000 000 F CFA). Non-emergent endoscopy services have been disrupted as incidence and hospitalizations were rising. It is anticipated that the peak incidence may be leveling off in many parts of the world, but there is a concern for resurgence of the virus activity. Thus, it is important for endoscopy units to have plans in place during peak times of the epidemic and when resuming endoscopic services as the pandemic wanes. The global endoscopy community is faced with the challenge of providing care during this time. The WEO-COVID guidance task force has provided this resource document based on the current evidence and consensus opinion. These World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) recommendations are meant to guide endoscopists worldwide, should be interpreted in light of specific clinical conditions and resource availability and may not apply in all situations. This guidance document does not supersede the need to check for all local regulations and legislations.
