"Gruesome Spectacles is a history of botched, mismanaged, and painful executions in the U.S. from 1890 to 2010. Using new research, Sarat traces the evolution of methods of execution that were employed during this time, and were meant to improve on the methods that went before, from hanging or firing squad to electrocution to gas and lethal injection. This volume of Studies in law, politics and society brings together an international spread of legal scholars, presenting a varied collection of chapters. Chapters include: child abduction during the military dictatorship in Argentina; a novel approach to empirical research on legal framing from the University of California, Berkeley; the role of silence in law and film from Israel; a chapter from Sweden on the use of video in the court of appeal; and finally two chapters on the supreme court in the USA, one looking at influences through social capital on supreme court decision makers and the second looking at the self-perception and public perception of the supreme court.

The objective of "Studies in Law, Politics, and Society" is to provide a vehicle for the publication of scholarly articles within the broad parameters of interdisciplinary legal scholarship. Whereas other law related publications publish within a single domain - the humanities, social science, or legal doctrine. Studies seeks to bridge those divides. We encourage submissions from a broad range of legal scholars and welcome articles exemplifying different theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. We welcome submissions from an international group of scholars.

"Merciful Judgments in Contemporary Society: Legal Problems/Legal Possibilities explores the tension between law's need for and dependence on merciful judgments and suspicions that regularly accompany them. Rather than focusing primarily on definitional questions or the longstanding debate about the moral worth and importance of mercy, this book focuses on mercy as a part of, and problem, for law. Whether one starts from a worry about rules and discretion, about the attitudes of citizens and their leaders, or ways to undo the past, merciful judgments challenge and perplex, just as they help to sustain, our legal system. Charting these possibilities and problems is the work that this book seeks to do. Here we ask what challenges merciful judgments pose for law? When and why do those judgments encourage and nurture legal ingenuity and resourcefulness? When and why do they precipitate crises and breakdowns in legal authority? "There is an enormous scholarly literature on law's treatment of religion. Most scholars now recognize that although the U.S. Supreme Court has not offered a consistent interpretation of what 'non-establishment' or religious freedom means, as a general matter it can be said that the First Amendment requires that government not give preference to one religion over another or, although this is more controversial, to religion over non-belief. But these rules raise questions that will be addressed in Legal Responses to Religious Practices in the United States: namely, what practices constitute a 'religious activity' such that it cannot be supported or funded by government? And what is a religion, anyway? How should law understand matters of faith and accommodate religious practices?"--

This volume Studies in Law, Politics and Society contains a symposium on indigenous peoples in Latin America. It examines the ways rights are negotiated between those groups and the states in which they live.
