Equal access to all software and digital content should be a reality in the Digital Era. This argument is something defended both by existing regulations, norms and standards, and also business organizations and governments. Despite this acknowledgement, the reality is still far from the desired equality. For certain groups of disabled or impaired citizens, such as the visually impaired, the existence of e-accessibility compliance represents an opportunity to integrate, in a more simple and straightforward manner, their societies. Despite the existing poor results on e-accessibility compliance, the mentioned citizens insist on using digital devices in their daily lives. Even though, in the last decade, multiple standards and regulations have been published towards indicating how to develop accessible digital user interfaces, there are still two major issues surrounding its implementation: the complexity and disparity of the documents containing the abovementioned norms, and also the lack of e-accessibility know-how by software experts. With this in mind, a proposal for an accessible software development model that encompasses e-accessibility incorporation as one of the development process activities has been presented. This model might represent a very interesting support tool for software development organizations and a novel resource for learning and training institutions to be able to improve their computer science and informatics students' skills on e-accessibility. ; This work was supported by national funds through the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the Project UID/CEC/04524/2016. South America is unique as it is home of two species of manatees: the West Indian manatee, Trichechus manatus, and the Amazonian manatee, T. inunguis. These species are easily identified by the belly skin coloration, the first is entirely gray whereas T. inunguis has a white mark pattern in the belly, and presence of nails in T. manatus, absent in T. inunguis. The morphology and the range of Trichechus species have been clearly established. However, we show that the belly skin coloration and the presence of nails on the pectoral flipper may be polymorphic. These findings prompted us to check all available information about the manatee. In view of lack of accurate data on manatee locations, we produced a gazetteer and a map of Trichechus spp. in South America using records obtained by regular monitoring of aquatic mammal strandings conducted by the Grupo de Estudos de Mamíferos Aquáticos da Amazônia of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, all available peer-reviewed data, reports, thesis, and newspaper files with photos showing diagnostic characters. These findings showed the need of improving the identification of these species before implementing conservation strategies. Finally, we present a complete report on the extant distribution of these species in South America.
Abstract
The appreciation of fresh vegetables, such as immature cowpea, has shown a growth in recent years, favoring the gradual increase in the purchase of these products by consumers. However, such food is not free of microorganisms, requiring processes that prioritize microbiological safety and restricted temperature control. Given the above, the objective of this work was to evaluate the action of different post-harvest treatments and storage time on microorganisms present in immature cowpea grains of the evergreen variety. The treatments: T1 packaging in packaging (control); T2 packaging in packaging + refrigeration; T3 packaging conditioning + vacuum + refrigeration; T4 packaging in packaging + bleaching + refrigeration; T5 packaging in packaging + bleaching + vacuum + refrigeration. Microbiological analyzes were performed at, 10, 20 and 40 days of storage, where for each season, four replications were randomly sampled and evaluated, per treatment, and the results obtained were expressed in the form of a table. Observations of bacteria incidence were carried out, as well as the fungi identification using a standard optical microscope. According to the results, the bleaching pretreatment in T4 and T5 presents a greater reduction in the diversity of microorganisms in immature cowpea grains after storage, however, it it is not able to completely eliminate mycotoxin-producing fungi and bacteria.

In 2007, during an official Flavescence dorée (FD) survey, typical FD symptoms, associated with desiccation of inflorescences, withering of clusters, irregular maturation of the wood, leaf rolling, typical vein banding, leaf yellowing on white grapevine variety Loureiro and leaf reddening on red variety Vinhão, were observed in vineyards from Amares region in northern Portugal. In 2002, similar but less severe symptoms occurring in the same region were associated with 16SrI phytoplasmas ('Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris'), subgroup 16SrI‐B (De Sousa et al., 2003). Cuttings and leaf samples were collected from plants with and without symptoms. Total DNA was extracted (Angelini et al., 2001) and assayed in a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers P1/P7 (Deng & Hiruki, 1991) followed by either R16F2n/R16R2 (F2n/R2) (Gundersen & Lee, 1996) or R16F1(V)/R16V1731r (F1/V1) (Martini et al., 1999). Phytoplasma strains from group 16SrV ('Ca. Phytoplasma ulmi'), elm yellows (EY1) and rubus stunt (RUS), were used as reference controls. Healthy C. roseus and no template DNA were used as negative controls. All plants with symptoms and reference controls showed PCR products (F2n/R2 and F1/V1), absent from samples from symptomless plants. Two representative F2n/R2 amplicons, were cloned, sequenced and deposited in GenBank (FJ611961 and FJ611962). The phytoplasma 16S rRNA sequences were identical and shared 99‐100% identity with those of group 16SrV. FD phytoplasmas from Portugal exhibited the characteristic FD‐D TaqI RFLP pattern. This is the first report of FD‐D in grapevine in northern Portugal. Although the current FD outbreak is limited to Amares region, the high pressure of the Scaphoideus titanus vector populations imposes a threat for FD spread, and a current alert for the Ministry of Agriculture (DGADR). The implementation of strategies for effective control of S.titanus and FD have been suggested and included in the Portuguese legislation (Portaria nº 976/2008, 1 September). ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
At the time of writing, the Italian Parliament is debating a new law that would make it legal to practice an unproven stem cell treatment in public hospitals. The treatment, offered by a private non-medical organization, may not be safe, lacks a rationale, and violates current national laws and European regulations. This case raises multiple concerns, most prominently the urgent need to protect patients who are severely ill, exposed to significant risks, and vulnerable to exploitation. The scientific community must consider the context—social, financial, medical, legal—in which stem cell science is currently situated and the need for stringent regulation. Additional concerns are emerging. These emanate from the novel climate, created within science itself, and stem cell science in particular, by the currently prevailing model of 'translational medicine'. Only rigorous science and rigorous regulation can ensure translation of science into effective therapies rather than into ineffective market products, and mark, at the same time, the sharp distinction between the striving for new therapies and the deceit of patients.
The virtual screening of a library of chalcone derivatives led us to the identification of potential new MDM2 ligands. The chalcones with the best docking scores obeying the Lipinski rule of five were subsequently prepared by base-catalyzed aldol reactions. The activity of these compounds as inhibitors of p53–MDM2 interaction was investigated using a yeast-based screening assay. Using this approach two chalcones (3 and 4) were identified as putative small molecule inhibitors of p53–MDM2 interaction. The activity of both chalcones was further investigated in a panel of human tumor cells. Chalcones 3 and 4 revealed a pronounced tumor cell growth inhibitory effect on tumor cell lines. Additionally, chalcone 4 caused alterations in the cell cycle profile, induced apoptosis and increased the levels of p53, p21 and PUMA proteins in NCI-H460 cells. Computational docking studies allowed to predict that, like nutlin-3A (a well-known small-molecule inhibitor of p53–MDM2 interaction), chalcones 3 and 4 bind to the p53-binding site of MDM2. The results here presented will be valuable for the structure-based design of novel and potent p53–MDM2 inhibitors. ; This research was partially supported by the Strategic Funding UID/Multi/04423/2013 , ERDF , COMPETE , and FCT under the projects PTDC/MAR-BIO/4694/2014, and INNOVMAR – Innovation and Sustainability in the Management and Exploitation of Marine Resources, reference NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000035 , Research Line NOVELMAR . Além disso, a agroecologia privilegia o mercado, economia e desenvolvimento da região.
