AN UNRESOLVED QUESTION CONCERNING THE NEW DEAL REALIGNMENT IS THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE DEMOCRATIC SURGE IN THE VOTE RESULTED FROM EITHER THE CONVERSION OF FORMER REPUBLICANS OR THE MOBILIZATION OF NEWLY ACTIVE VOTERS. ANALYZING SURVEY DATA FROM THE LITERARY DIGEST STRAW POLLS AND FROM EARLY GALLUP POLLS, THE AUTHORS FIND EVIDENCE SUPPORTING THE CONVERSION HYPOTHESIS.

The ability of the mass public to recall the name of the incumbent congressional repre sentative is compared to the ability to recognize their congressman's name. Name recog nition is substantially higher than name recall. The implications for the study of congres sional elections are discussed.

The SE background, political attitudes, & motivations for political activism among anti-ERA political activists are investigated, utilizing a sample consisting of 154 F's interviewed during an anti-ERA rally at the Tex State Legislature. They were found to be well-educated with high family incomes; a large majority belonging to fundamentalist religious denominations. Their political attitudes fit with those of the American Radical Right & they were particularly concerned with domestic communism. They were also politically active & could not be classed as being alienated. The conclusion is that their basic motivation to activism on the ERA issue came from a fundamentalist religious belief. 4 Tables. AA.

Sex differences in political behavior & interest have generally been investigated from the standpoint of socialization. By varying political situations (high stimulus & low stimulus) & holding other factors, eg, socialization, as constant as possible, the effects of situation on political interest for both Ms & Fs were explored. Siblings (N = 139), one in Coll & one who had never attended Coll, completed questionnaires about political interest, efficacy, information, & participation. Sibling pairs were either: M in Coll, F not; F in Coll, F not; or F in Coll, M not. It was hypothesized that the sibling in Coll (a high stimulus political environment) would show greater political interest, efficacy, information, & participation than the sibling not in Coll, regardless of sex. Using a sample of 628 white, black, & Hispanic voters in a large urban school district, we test a series of hypotheses about voting in a school bond election. We find that there is a core of similar results across racial/ethnic groups. All three groups show strong, directly measured, self-interest effects. We also find some distinct group differences. Symbolic values played a limited role for white voters, but a stronger role for minorities. In addition, for white voters, we find a substantial drop in support for the bond across age cohorts, but no such drop among black & Hispanic voters. 4 Tables, 2 Appendixes, 43 References.
