Au moment de l'affaire Dreyfus, la Ligue des patriotes a vainement tenté un coup de force le 23 février 1899 puis en a préparé un second à l'été suivant, avant d'être paralysée par la répression policière. Déroulède voulait allier l'insurrection populaire à l'appel au sabre et estimait réunies les conditions nécessaires : une situation de crise mobilisant l'opinion parisienne, une ligue forte et résolue, des complicités civiles et militaires nombreuses, un gouvernement chancelant. Son échec s'explique autant par l'absence de ces facteurs que par une stratégie blanquiste archaïque et des lacunes tactiques insurmontables. Cet échec illustre les rapports complexes que le nationalisme a toujours entretenus avec l'idée d'insurrection.
