In their interesting note on the origin of "Jeofail",' Doctors Baker and Arnold suggest that the word is derived from jeu-faille (= game-fail) and say that "A 'game-fail' in chess was presumably a stalemate; neither party could win, so the game failed or ended. "2 Since it has long been known that "jeopardy" has a chess origin3 (either from the old French "jeu parti" or the Latin "jocus partitus" = game in the balance and hence an uncertain chance) this explanation has an obvious attraction. Indeed in view of the alphabetical work habits of-lexicographers it is surprising that the suggestion has not been made before. (The two words are consecutive in the Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology). 4 Nevertheless the argument based on the analogy with chess is not free from difficulties. The definition of stalemate is inelegant for the modern version of the game but much more important it is very far from clear that in 1378 the result of a stalemate was that the game was drawn.

It has always been very clear to me what terrorism is, who terrorists are and what they have been doing. So I decided to take the challenge of co-ordinating a workshop1 entitled Origins of terrorism, as (of course!) I already knew everything about it. How wrong was I!
In this volume, Professor Deakin and Professor Pistor include those key articles which highlight the major contributions to, but also the inherent limits of, the legal origin literature. They consider the merits of this approach in the context of three fields of inquiry: the study of comparative law; the analysis of the relation between law and markets; and the understanding of the role of legal systems in social ordering. In their thought-provoking new introduction, the editors discuss the modifications to the original legal origin hypothesis over time and point the way for the future development of this influential, yet controversial, theory. ; https://scholarship.law.columbia.edu/books/1155/thumbnail.jpg

Nat'l-origins provisions of immigration (Im) law have often been considered the controlling factor in Im since 1930. When such provisions became effective under the Im Act of 1924, quotas were established based on the nat'l origin of white persons recorded in the Census of 1920. The volume of Im was definitely reduced by the quota provisions, but the selection in the proper proportions according to the nat'l-origins provisions has never been successful. Countries given large quotas seldom have used 50% of their quota numbers, so that, even in the yrs of highest quota Im, only 66% of the quotas could be used. Congress provided that spouses & children of US citizens should not be debarred from entry by the quota system. Such immigrants brought about a further departure from the nat'l-origins plan. In order to meet the US's moral obligation for refugees & displaced persons, Congress enacted legislation which permitted the admission of such victims of war & communist domination. Their numbers also served to pull immigrant distribution by countries farther from the desires of the proponents of nat'l-origins quotas. Emigration from Western Hemisphere countries, unrestricted by quotas, in total/sum has been equal to 73% of quota Im since the nat'l-origins quotas were established. Under recent legislation, the nat'lorigins plan will be abandoned, & by Jul 1, 1968, immigrants will be admitted in the order in which they file applications for visas, regardless of their countries of birth.

The origins of organizing are conventionally seen as emerging from the historiographical works of Western social scientists in the early 20th century. Here, the authors address a gap in current literature by exploring previously unrecognized or marginalized global origins in both modern and ancient history
