Objetivo. Discutir la relación entre sexualidad y violencia como ejes articuladores de los crímenes por prejuicio sexual. Metodología. Se realiza un estudio de caso del homicidio en el año 2007 de Edgar Enrique Echevarría Sánchez (conocido como 'Balalá'), hombre gay de 44 años de edad, asesinado en el municipio de Puerto López (Meta, Colombia). Resultados. A partir de dicho caso, y con base en el material bibliográfico y testimonial recaudado, se analiza la confluencia de tales elementos en la construcción de las representaciones sociales vinculadas con los homicidios de odio y el mantenimiento de un orden social hegemónico proclive a la eliminación de aquellos sujetos señalados como diferentes en dicha entidad territorial. Conclusión. La ciudad moderna configura un espacio desde el cual producir, relacionarse, pero también vivir en el anonimato cuando el vínculo social ha sido fracturado o capturado bajo formas poco comprensibles de ver lo individual y lo social. ; Objective. To discuss the relationship between sexuality and violence as political axes of crimes of sexual prejudice. Methodology. a case study of a 44 years old gay man named Edgar Enrique Echevarría Sánchez' (known as Balalá) who was murdered in the municipality of Puerto López (Meta, Colombia) is carried out. Results. From this case, and based on the literature and collected witness accounts, the confluence of these elements is discussed in the construction of social representations linked to the murders of hatred and maintaining a hegemonic social order conducive to the elimination of those subjects identified as "different" in that territorial entity. Conclusion. the modern cities set up a space from which it can produce, interact, but also live in anonymity when the social bond has been broken or captured under some understandable ways of seeing the individual and the social aspects.

This study analyzed the psycho-social and psycho-political variables that contribute to predict prejudice towards sex workers (PSW). A two-phase quantitative study with university students was carried out: phase one included an instrumental research oriented to the construction and evaluation of a scale of PSW; phase two consisted of an ex post facto study with simple retrospective design. After ratifying the psychometric qualities of the constructed scale, a multiple regression analysis was performed. In both PSW dimensions, authoritarianism and opposition to equality were two of the variables that most contributed to the prediction. Also, religion and ideological self-placement were included in the models.

AbstractThe legal treatment of and attitudes toward sexual minorities has changed considerably over recent decades in the United States, highlighting the role of historical context in the unfolding of human lives. Yet, a full application of the life course perspective to the topic of structural inequalities faced by sexual minorities is missing from the scholarly literature. Through synthesizing and analyzing research findings from the past 15 years, we explain how the five tenets of the life course framework apply to sexual minorities, including (1) the interplay of history and human lives, (2) the timing of lives, (3) linked lives, (4) human development and aging as lifelong processes, and (5) human agency. In doing so, we argue that a life course perspective is crucial for understanding the nature and consequences of prejudice and discrimination faced by sexual minorities. We end with discussion of the need for additional research and methodological innovations regarding distinctive aging experiences, cumulative inequality, and intersectionality.

Sexual Attraction explores different sides of mutual attraction between the sexes, especially why individuals are attracted to some people and not others who may themselves be generally well liked. This book also considers how sexual attraction is communicated to both people in a social encounter and argues that there is a strong but often disregarded prejudice against those who are physically unattractive. What is the political significance of difference? Why are ethnic, racial, or religious differences frequently politically significant while differences in height, hair color, or weight are not? Why are linguistic differences sometimes relevant politically, and other times are not salient? What about age? Gender or sexual preferences? What fosters tolerance of differences judged ethically and politically salient? What encourages respect for these differences, leading some of us to reach out across divides that isolate others? These questions take on a poignant immediacy with reports of continuing prejudice and discrimination; ongoing ethnic, religious, and sectarian violence—even genocidal activities and war; and increasing polarization over issues of race, religion, and ethnicity, at home and abroad. They are questions students need to consider as they go out into a world where they will meet new people, from diverse cultures, religions, and ethnicities. How can we best prepare them for this?

Curs acadèmic 2015-2016 ; La libertad sexual y la igualdad de género a menudo han estado sujetas a actitudes y comportamientos negativos en distintos momentos de la historia. En la actualidad, los prejuicios sexuales son todavía una realidad muy presente en distintas regiones del mundo (Herek, 2015). También en Occidente, donde los prejuicios sexuales, raciales y de género tienden a manifestarse de una forma moderna, más sutil y menos evidente (Frías, 2006; Quiles, 2003). Con el objetivo de examinar estas actitudes en los profesionales sanitarios, administramos tres cuestionarios sobre prejuicio sexual e igualdad de género a una población de médicos/as, enfermeros/as y psicólogos/as (n=290) en su mayoría españoles. Los resultados muestran actitudes generalmente abiertas y favorables hacia la diversidad sexual en población sanitaria, aunque con diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los participantes en función de variables personales como el sexo, la edad, la profesión, las creencias políticas y religiosas y la orientación sexual. Los resultados se discuten en relación a la teoría del conflicto con el rol de género (O´Neil, 2008), el fundamentalismo religioso (Mc. Dermott, 2014) y las creencias autoritarias (Stefurak, 2010). ; Sexual freedom and gender equality are often subject to negative attitudes and behaviours throughout history. Nowadays, sexual prejudice is still a reality in different regions in the world (Herek, 2015). This also happens in Western countries, where sexual, gender and racial prejudices are more modern, more subtitle and less obvious (Frías, 2006; Quiles, 2003). With the purpose of examining these attitudes among the healthcare professionals, three different surveys about sexual prejudice and gender equality have been provided to doctors, nurses and psychologists (n=290), most of them being Spanish. The results show open minded and favorable attitudes towards sexual diversity among the healthcare professional, although there are statistically significant differences among the participants depending on different variables like gender, age, profession, political and religious beliefs, and sexual orientation. The results are being discussed in relation to the theory of conflict with the gender role (O´Neil, 2008), the religious fundamentalism (Mc. Dermott, 2014) and the authoritarian ideologies (Stefurak, 2010).

Abstract
The public use of the niqab and other religious face coverings is a source of considerable debate in Western nations. The veiled Muslim woman is often constructed as "other," reviled as backward, represented as in need of rescue, or associated with Islamic extremism. Despite widespread racist attitudes, officially, Canadians purport to support multiculturalism and the equality of all people under the law as guaranteed under section 15 of the Charter. In a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision, R v NS, the Court had to consider the right of a Muslim woman to wear her niqab while testifying in a sexual assault trial. In "balancing" the conflict between the religious rights of NS and the section 7 rights of the accused to a full and fair defense, the Court ignored the security of the person and equality rights of NS. The Court instead legitimated anti-Muslim stereotypes and reiterated rape myths that had ostensibly been overturned.

AbstractThis article explores the concept of resurgent prejudice in response to marriage equality in Australia. We are using the term "resurgent prejudice" to refer to examples of reactionary collective action directed towards the rainbow community in Australia, with a specific focus on efforts to undermine progressive developments in sexual citizenship. We argue that Australia is currently seeing forms of resurgent prejudice in response to the passage of marriage equality legislation in 2017 by the federal Parliament and use the highly controversial Religious Discrimination Bill of 2022 as an example to illustrate this process. By making use of interviews with members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (rainbow) community, we highlight the concerns members of the rainbow community have regarding their rights, sexual citizenship and social participation. We conclude the article by arguing that vigilance is vital in the face of resurgent prejudice to preserve social and civil rights, and that an awareness of the concept of resurgent prejudice can be used by advocates to strengthen their social movements.

While the power of legal exclusion in stigmatisation is undeniable, its impact on ally behaviour has never been explored. This gap in stigma, law, and allyship is the focus of the present study. More specifically, this study shows how exclusion of the stigmatised from a legal system increases prejudicial attitudes expressed by allies. Using sexual prejudice, negative attitudes towards sexual minorities, as a proxy for stigma, this study explores 'Superficial Allies' or those who express full support for sexual minorities while refusing neighbouring proximity to them. Using attitudinal data from the Integrated Values Surveys (1981–2016), a large international (113 countries/regions) cross-sectional time-series survey, this study investigates the role of legal inclusion and social obedience in sexual prejudice expressed by those who fully support sexual minorities and those who fully reject them. The results of logistic regression models suggest that the absence of legal recognition and protection for sexual minorities at the national level increases expression of sexual prejudice among both allies and the stigmatisers. While social obedience plays a significant role in stigmatisers' expression of sexual prejudice, it shows no significance for the ally population. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
