Abstract Studies argue that formal schooling in Indigenous communities tends to be negatively associated with children acquiring local cultural knowledge, and that formal schooling using a language and world views unrelated to local knowledge contributes to its erosion. Yet the impact of schooling on a community extends far beyond the curriculum itself. School reshapes the daily routine, as well as the nature of work and leisure for children, teachers, parents and the community. In cultures such as that of the Wauja of central Brazil, where, before the arrival of schools, all adults contributed to food production, schooling immediately creates a division of labor between salaried workers who can buy food and people without salaries who must produce it themselves. Salaries change not only labor patterns, but the local economy itself, as well as residence patterns, and even gender roles. Young men who earn salaries can be head of their own nuclear family households, instead of doing bride service and living in extended family households under the authority of a father-in-law. This change in residence patterns, in turn, impacts roles and status of women within their homes. Effects of various disruptive forces associated with introduction of schools are examined.

One of the main features of videos that popularise science on YouTube is the ability to interact with the videos and the YouTubers who generate them. However, some types of interaction are often not gender neutral. In order to identify whether there are gender differences in the type of comments posted on YouTube channels that popularise science, a content analysis of nine such channels hosted by Spanish macro influencers was conducted. A total of 221 videos and 18,873 comments were analysed to identify and classify comments of a personal nature relating to physical appearance, tone of voice, or intellectual capacity, among other aspects. The results show that 7.5% (1,424) of the total number of analysed comments were comments of a personal nature addressed to the channel's host. Of the videos hosted by women, 95.3% contained at least one positive comment related to their physical appearance, compared to 27% in the case of men. Gender differences were mainly found in negative comments regarding the presenter's intellectual ability or personality, with women most likely to receive them. These results show that women who face media exposure are more vulnerable to negative sexist comments, which may deter them from professionalisation in this area.

This article is the result of research on the cultural heritage of the Bugis people of Luwu, South Sulawesi. The research questions that were raised were: how is inheritance practiced among the indigenous people of Bugis Luo, what is the meeting point of inheritance between Islamic law and customary law, and how do Islamic law and customary law combine to create gender. Primary data was collected through in-depth and structured interviews, as well as on-site observation. The analysis was performed using interpretive methods. The study was conducted by analyzing the regulations related to the legal issues discussed by analyzing the laws and comparing the decisions of the Luwu and Bugis courts with the perspective of customary law and Islamic law. The analysis used in this study resulted in women and men being equal. Bugis Luwu Sulawesi has a pluralistic hereditary system with both Islamic and traditional elements. Equal rights and rules are general ideas. This research is based on the proposed mixed inheritance model: masssideppungeng that links the heirs to family, government, and religious customary authorities, the distribution of assets to field conditions, and proportionally identifies the needs, wants, and goals of the inheritors.

In the current study we sought to identify sexual behavior profiles and examine the levels of childhood abuse history and trauma measures in each profile. The study was conducted among a large non-clinical sample of men and women ( n = 806). Latent profile analysis was employed to identify distinct profiles of sexual behaviors and then childhood abuse, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety, and motives for engaging in sex were assessed in each profile. Four distinct profiles of sexual behavior were identified: hyposexual individuals, hypersexual porn users, porn users, and within usual ranges (WURs). Hypersexual porn users had significantly more childhood trauma (emotional, physical, and sexual) than WURs, significantly greater PTSD symptom than WURs and hyposexual individuals, and significantly greater anxiety and depression as compared with all other groups. The hyposexual individuals had significantly lower scores on all motives for engaging in sex than did porn users or hypersexual porn users. Hypersexual porn users and porn users reported coping and peer-pressure as motives for engaging in sex more than did WURs or hyposexual individuals. Clinicians working with survivors of childhood abuse should consider directly targeting these different maladaptive sexual behaviors by addressing PTSD symptoms, affective disorders, and motives for engaging in sex.

Considering the increasing divorce rates today, it is noteworthy that it is necessary to determine the factors that individuals pay attention to in choosing a spouse. From this point of view, the aim of the study is to examine the effect of family climate and attachment style on the prediction of adults' relationship role expectations.The sample of the study consists of 256 women and 103 men who are legally of age living in Turkey. Based on the purpose of the research, the data were collected with the Personal Information Form, Marriage Role Expectation Scale, the Family Climate Scale and the Three-Dimensional Attachment Styles Scale. Correlations between variables were examined and multiple regression analysis was performed. According to the results of the research, relationship role expectations showed correlations with individuals' age, gender, number of siblings, family type, marital status, cohabitants and romantic relationship status. It was seen that the only variable predicting egalitarian role expectation was gender. Gender, marital status, intergenerational authority, secure attachment style, and anxious-avoidant attachment variables were found to predict traditional role expectancy. We analyse tenure choice determinants of Poles for the years 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 on EU-SILC data, distinguishing between co-residence with the parents, renting at market rates and owning a house. The average marginal effects obtained from multinomial logistic regressions allows us to conclude that ownership is strongly connected to the family status, but this relationship weakens over time. Unmarried people without children but with better incomes become increasingly more likely to be homeowners. Thus, ownership is not anymore a main domain of conventional families. Moreover, renting becomes an option to become independent for those who cannot afford to buy a house. But it is rather a temporary solution, because renting is more costly than buying a house with a mortgage. We also find evidence of the gender gap in homeownership, as women are more likely to be owners, and less likely to co-reside with their parents than men. Along the evolution of the housing finance system, growing wages make ownership more likely. We observe that the choices are more free in densely populated regions, where the rental market develops. In this part of the paper explain the data that we use, present the empirical results and discuss them.

The response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the US has been heavily criticized for its reliance on people's voluntary uptake of health protective behaviors like mask-wearing. Such voluntary approaches to public health crises assume individuals are altruistic and will put the good of the community before themselves. However, social groups operate in distinct ways and have different motivations. Since ideas of individualism in the US are both gendered and racialized, we adopt an intersectional approach to examine how both race and gender interact to shape mask-wearing behaviors. Using a survey of 1,269 adults in the US, we find that white women are less likely to wear a mask than Latinas and Black women but observe no differences amongst men. Our data suggest that these differences arise because white women are more likely to approach mask-wearing as a personal choice, whereas Latinas and Black women are more likely to take a collectivist approach and view mask-wearing as a social responsibility. We highlight the importance of adopting an intersectional approach to understand true variability in health protective behaviors. We also draw attention to the importance of developing community-specific public health messaging that resonates with its members' norms and experiences.

The present work introduces the scholarly community to a database containing information about the invalids, orphans, and widows of the First World War in Transylvania—the IOW database, which uses data extracted from the files relating to pensions awarded to these social categories as its main sources. These consist primarily of civil status documents, reports on the personal characteristics of the enrolled soldiers, data relating to war participation and testimonies proving disappearance or death in addition to medical records, as well as information regarding the situations of the beneficiaries' families and the amounts of money they received, and evidence attesting changes in the status of pension beneficiaries. Next, the details were entered into a relational database that will enable multiple scientific investigations in the fields of humanities, social sciences, and legal studies, as well as medicine and history of medicine, and offer the possibility of having a social and cultural impact among the general public and local communities. The preliminary results, drawn from the table relating to widows, illustrate the negative consequences of war on the lives of men, women, and children in Transylvania. Finally, the paper outlines further development of the database and future lines of research.

Contemporary discourse on gender equality in the mass media focuses primarily on analysing news programmes, TV series and advertisements. However, films also constitute powerful cultural stimuli, capable of modifying the attitudes and behaviour of both audiences and the society as a whole. The strength and longevity of their impact lie in their deep roots in the culture in which they operate. For cinematic representations of women and men, this process implies the need to constantly refer to a certain stock of conventions, cultural stereotypes and ways of thinking about gender present in the mentality and social structures of a given community. The same applies to images of women in power in film, which on the one hand are determined by cultural patterns attributed to each gender, while on the other they themselves contribute to their perpetuation in the social consciousness, at the same time creating social images of relations between gender and power in political and economic life. The article discusses this phenomenon in relation to selected Polish films after 1989. The paper will analyse how the roles and behavioural patterns attributed to women were (re)defined in the (changing) public sphere and what the position of characters representing these characteristics was in the narrative of the films.

AbstractPeople vary in climate change skepticism and in their views on disaster cause and prevention. For example, the United States boasts higher rates of climate skepticism than other countries, especially among Republicans. Research into the individual differences that shape variation in climate-related beliefs represents an important opportunity for those seeking ways to mitigate climate change and climate-related disasters (e.g., floods). In this registered report, we proposed a study examining how individual difference in physical formidability, worldview, and affect relate to attitudes about disaster and climate change. We predicted that highly formidable men would tend to endorse social inequality, hold status quo defensive worldviews, report lower levels of empathy, and report attitudes that promote disaster risk accumulation via lesser support for social intervention. The results of an online study (Study 1) support the notion that men's self-perceived formidability is related to disaster and climate change beliefs in the predicted direction and that this relationship is mediated by hierarchical worldview and status quo defense but not empathy. An analysis of a preliminary sample for the in-lab study (Study 2) suggests that self-perceived formidability relates to disaster views, climate views, and status quo maintaining worldviews.

"The accelerating destructive effects of pollution threaten the existence of all inhabitants of planet earth. Health promotion interventions inevitably include a dynamic harmony of various interacting planetary components and contexts, bio-psycho-social as well as spiritual, cultural and ecological. This study was based on a broad research question as to what would best heal polluted planet earth. As with most countries, South Africa is slowly recovering from the effects of COVID-19. It seemed timeous to investigate a local sample of knowledgeable and experienced persons with regard to their views on pollution prevention and health promotion. Sixteen local KwaZulu-Natal persons responded to an online google questionnaire. There were 5 men and 11 women, with a mean age of 55 and age range from 25 to 73 years. Data analysis using NVivo12 software indicated that participants' responses generally coalesced into a coherent health promotion theme including subthemes of awareness, education, regulation, and action to prevent human destructiveness, promote healing and the holistic integrity of nature. Unique local findings as well as those similar to other studies are discussed. Further research could include formal scales with larger local and international samples in interconnected, ecological and health promotion initiatives."

In 1846, in his serialized novel Woman's Love: A Romance of Smiles and Tears!, G. Herbert Rodwell (1800–52) introduced a Pākehā Māori character, 'the wandering Missionary, Tang-goo'. Although Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville (1790–1842) had included a Pākehā Māori in his earlier novel, Les Zélandais: Histoire Australienne, written in 1824–25, this remained unpublished, and therefore Rodwell's Tang-goo appears to be the first such character in a published novel. Tang-goo is a richly imaginative conception drawing on various sources, including the Pākehā Māori who had come to London, a 'White Father' character in G. P. R. novel, The Gipsy, the Native American category of 'medicine men', the experiences of missionaries in New Zealand, especially Samuel Marsden's 1820 travels, and the Biblical John the Baptist. For much of Rodwell's novel, Tang-goo is taken to be authentically Māori and as such seems to be a fantastical representation of Britain's civilizing influence in New Zealand. The novel's late revelation that Tang-goo was born an English nobleman explodes such a fantasy and also subverts the stereotyped negative portrayals of Pākehā Māori in missionary literature. Tang-goo knows himself to be a unique figure; his creation of a Māori identity is complete only once he is dead.

The 'gentlemen of the flashing blade' laboured in an occupation that no longer exists in Australia: canecutting. It was a hard job done by hard men, and its iconic figure – the canecutter – survives as a Queensland legend, so extensively romanticized in the popular culture of the time as to constitute a subgenre characterized by subject matter and motifs particular to the pre-mechanization sugar country culture. Yet, it may seem like the only canecutters immortalized in the arts are Summer of the Seventeenth Doll's Roo and Barney. To show the breadth and diversity of this subgenre, and the legend of the canecutter and sugar country culture, this article reviews a selection of novels, memoirs, plays, short stories, cartoons, verse, song, film, television, radio and children's books. These works address the racial, cultural and industrial politics of the sugar industry and its influence on the economic and social development of Queensland. The parts played by the nineteenth-century communities of indentured South Sea Islanders and the European immigrants who followed are represented along with those of the itinerant Anglos. These works depict, and celebrate, a colourful, often brutal, part of Queensland's past and an Australian icon comparable with the swaggie or the shearer.

ABSTRACT The study aimed to identify strategies to qualify the practices of health care destined to People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), especially the accompanying at health care services. Four pedagogical workshops were carried out, between September 2021 and February 2022, in which PLWHA who live in Belo Horizonte and Metropolitan region were invited to share their experiences regarding HIV/AIDS and to reflect about how formal and informal groups, represented graphically by the technique of Venn Diagram, can contribute to qualify health care practices destined to PLWHA. Twenty PLWHA joined the study; thirteen cisgender men, six cisgender women and one trans woman. The elements included at the Diagram have been categorized at dimensions: structural, informational, and relational. The results demonstrate that, despite the advance at structural dimension, we have evolved very little when it comes to main elements from relational and informational dimensions. The morals metaphors about HIV/AIDS and the stigma remain modeling practices of health care for PLWHA, emphasizing the urgent reconstruction of these practices. We comprehend that this reconstruction demands the rescue of the participation and citizenship, consolidated by the empowerment of assistance policies and prevention to HIV/AIDS as well the assurance of human rights.

AbstractCousin marriage, a spousal union between close kin, occurs at high frequencies in many parts of the world. The rates of cousin marriage in humans are concordant with empirical studies that challenge the traditionally held view that reproduction with kin is generally avoided in animals. Similarly, some theoretical models in animal behaviour show that inbreeding avoidance is more constrained than previously thought. Such studies highlight the importance of quantifying the costs and benefits of reproduction among close kin over the whole life-course. Here, we use genealogical data from two human populations with high frequencies of cousin marriage (the Dogon from Mali, and the Ancien Régime nobility from Europe) to estimate these potential costs and benefits. We compare age-specific fertility and survival curves, as well as the projected growth rates, of subpopulations of each marriage type. Fitness costs of cousin marriage are present in terms of reduced child survival (in both populations), while benefits exist as increased fertility for men (in the Dogon) and for women (in the Ancien Régime nobility). We also find some differences in the projected growth rates of lineages as a function of marriage type. Finally, we discuss the trade-offs that might shape marriage decisions in different ecological conditions.
