OBJECTIVE To describe the epidemiology of 2009 A/H1N1 influenza in critically ill pregnant women. DESIGN Population based cohort study. SETTING All intensive care units in Australia and New Zealand. PARTICIPANTS All women with 2009 H1N1 influenza who were pregnant or recently post partum and admitted to an intensive care unit in Australia or New Zealand between 1 June and 31 August 2009. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. RESULTS 64 pregnant or postpartum women admitted to an intensive care unit had confirmed 2009 H1N1 influenza. Compared with non-pregnant women of childbearing age, pregnant or postpartum women with 2009 H1N1 influenza were at increased risk of admission to an intensive care unit (relative risk 7.4, 95% confidence interval 5.5 to 10.0). This risk was 13-fold greater (13.2, 9.6 to 18.3) for women at 20 or more weeks' gestation. At the time of admission to an intensive care unit, 22 women (34%) were post partum and two had miscarried. 14 women (22%) gave birth during their stay in intensive care and 26 (41%) were discharged from an intensive care unit with ongoing pregnancy. All subsequently delivered. 44 women (69%) were mechanically ventilated. Of these, nine (14%) were treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Seven women (11%) died. Of 60 births after 20 weeks' gestation, four were stillbirths and three were infant deaths. 22 (39%) of the liveborn babies were preterm and 32 (57%) were admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. Of 20 babies tested, two were positive for the 2009 H1N1 virus. The avalanche processes in the world have clearly confirmed the need for a holistic inventory, significant correction and, in many cases, a radical reassessment of the previous version of the 2016 Foreign Policy Concept of Russia. The dynamics of world politics is so rapid that many of them, no longer fit into the previous schemes. A fundamentally significant matrix in understanding and rethinking the doctrinal and practical-political experience of Russian diplomacy has become the approval by President V.V. Putin on March 31, 2023 of the new Foreign Policy Concept of the Russian Federation (hereinafter: FPC-2023). FPC-2023 marks an unprecedented turning point in the conceptualization of attitudes of Russian diplomacy. A clearly defined continuity has been preserved with respect to the fundamental principles of Russia's foreign policy. FPC-2023 is a new geopolitical premises for the positioning of Russia in the global space and in its relations with the world. The basic system components of Russia's national-state interests have been elaborated in a comprehensive integrity and linkage. FPC-2023 is a convincing answer to those Western politicians who stubbornly consider Russia a semi-peripheral zone in the global space. From FPC-2023 it clearly follows that the strategically "unprofitable" search for a balance between the possible and the impossible has ended. It fully takes into account the negativism of the predominant part of the Western political establishment towards Russia, which has sharply increased in connection with the special military operation in Ukraine. The new Concept takes into account the destructive features of today's crisis geopolitics, but does not block constructive paths to a more optimistic future of international relations.

The author of this article studies the attempts to conquer the Baltic fuel market by Donetsk coal at the beginning of the 20th century. Author analyzed the main delivery directions of coal from the Donbas to the Baltic consumers (railway, transportations by the sea around the Europe, Dnieper–Dvina Canal). The study on general scientific and special methods of history (statistic, comparative-historical, retrospective etc.) is based; it was used also the interdisciplinary and corporatist approaches.On the basis of the documentation of representative organizations of entrepreneurs, materials of periodical publications and government orders shows the author of this article that extractive capacity of the Donetsk coal industry at the beginning of the 20-th century significantly prevailed the existing demand. Author described the peculiarities of the Baltic fuel market (dependence on English fuel, interconnection of coal imports and grain exports from the North-West region). It was traced the evolution of the views of statesmen about the replacement of Donetsk coal on English coal in the ports of the Baltic Sea from economic expediency to issues of national security. Author explained the necessary components for the delivery the Donetsk fuel by railway (reduction of tariffs, building of additional railway lines and provision of the railway system by goods carriages), the delivery method by sea is accept as the most probable way. Author is focused the attention on the large-scale project of the river connection of the Black and Baltic Seas – the Kherson–Riga waterway.Despite the unfulfilled plan of conquest, the Baltic fuel market by Donetsk fuel at the beginning of the 20-th century, the directions of economic improvements that by entrepreneurs were developed became a demonstrative indication of their unity, a strategic vision of possible ways of developing the region. Therefore, it will be of scientific and practical interest to apply to the historical experience of economic interaction (or developed projects) in the Black Sea-Baltic region, the further study of mutually beneficial economic projects between Ukraine and the Baltic States. ; У статті досліджується спроба завоювання прибалтійського паливного ринку донецьким вугіллям на початку ХХ ст., проаналізовано головні напрями доставки кам'яного вугілля з Донбасу до прибалтійських споживачів (залізничне сполучення, морські перевезення довкола Європи, Дніпровсько-Двінський водний канал). Дослідження базується на загальнонаукових і спеціально-історичних методах (статистичний, порівняльноісторичний, ретроспективний тощо); в його основу покладено міждисциплінарний і корпоративістський підходи.На основі діловодної документації представницьких організацій підприємців, матеріалів періодичних видань, урядових розпоряджень у статті показано, що добувна спроможність донецької кам'яновугільної промисловості на початку ХХ ст. значно переважала наявний попит. Охарактеризовано особливості прибалтійського паливного ринку (залежність від англійського палива, взаємопов'язаність вугільного імпорту та хлібного експорту в Північно-Західному краї). Простежено еволюцію поглядів державних діячів щодо заміни донецьким вугіллям англійського в портах Балтійського моря від економічної доцільності до питань загальнодержавної безпеки. Висвітлено необхідні для залізничних поставок донецького палива складники (зниження тарифів, будівництво додаткових залізничних гілок та забезпечення мережі вантажними вагонами), виділено морський спосіб перевезення як найбільш вірогідний, акцентовано увагу на масштабному проекті річкового сполучення між Чорним і Балтійським морями – водний шлях Херсон–Рига.Попри нереалізованість задуму із завоювання донецьким вугіллям прибалтійського паливного ринку на початку ХХ ст., розроблені підприємцями напрями економічних вдосконалень стали наочним свідченням їхньої згуртованості, стратегічного бачення можливих шляхів розвитку регіону. Тому становитиме науковий і практичний інтерес звернення до історичного досвіду економічної взаємодії (або розроблених проектів) в ЧорноморськоБалтійському регіоні, подальше вивчення взаємовигідних економічних проектів між Україною та країнами Прибалтики.

In search of new literary voices that might present an answer to Amitav Ghosh's 2016 lament on the failure of contemporary literary fiction to find forms that adequately express the multiple challenges of the Anthropocene, I came across a review of Allegra Hyde's debut novel in the Los Angeles Times. The novel's title, Eleutheria, was suggestive enough to pique my interest: etymologically, it evokes the concepts of liberty and freedom; geographically, it calls to mind the small island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas that was colonized in the late 1640s by a group of English Puritans known as the Eleutheran Adventurers. Add to this that Willa Marks, the novel's narrator-protagonist, is a twenty-two-year-old member of Generation Z, the same generation as the students we teach these days, and Eleutheria (2022) becomes a worthy candidate for an American Studies syllabus. What kind of narrative tapestry was the author able to weave out of the materials of history, climate change, and a young generation's growing frustration with the ecological and political state of the world? I was ready to discuss these and similar questions with a group of students in a seminar on Anglophone Literature in the Anthropocene during the summer semester 2023. Serendipitously, the son of an American colleague and long-time friend studied with Allegra Hyde at Oberlin College, where she is Assistant Professor of Creative Writing. He suggested that she might be willing to discuss her novel with a group of German students. When I issued the invitation to join us digitally for one session, she accepted. I interviewed Hyde, who is also the author of two short story collections – Of This New World (2016) and The Last Catastrophe (2023)– a few days later.
