This article seeks to apply mainstream criminological discourses to refugee policy, using Australia's refugee policy as a case study. Notions of security, ethnicity, race, social exclusion and xenophobia are all well established within various criminological discourses. This article aims to show that the use of similar discourses in both the criminological and refugee spheres is increasingly prevalent and helps to justify restrictive refugee practices within the context of societal security.

A historical sketch of the class-race-gender construct considers its application & impact in the social sciences & criminology as variously expressed & embodied in current research. Existing social-structural relations of class, race, & gender have been targeted by movements for changing the status quo, whose activism has produced increased consciousness. The class-race-gender construct originated with 1960s black feminism, & was popularized by higher education curriculum-integration projects. After highlighting the construct's use in the 1980s feminist writings of June Jordan, Audre Lorde, & Minnie Bruce Pratt, an engaged approach to the interdependent & multiple relations of class, race, & gender is called for. Max Horkheimer is well known as the director of the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research and as a sometime collaborator with Theodor Adorno, especially on their classic Dialectic of Enlightenment. These essays reveal another side of Horkheimer, focusing on his remarkable contributions to critical theory in the 1930s. Included are Horkheimer's inaugural address as director of the Institute, in which he outlines the interdisciplinary research program that would dominate the initial phase of the Frankfurt School, his first full monograph, and a number of other pieces published in the 1930s. The essays, most of which have not appeared in English before, are surprisingly relevant to current post-philosophy debates, notably "On the Problem of Truth," with its focus on pragmatism, and "The Rationalism Debate in Current Philosophy," a sustained critique of the post-Cartesian philosophy of consciousness. Horkheimer's 1933 critique of Kantian ethics, "Materialism and Morality," is of particular interest given the current reaction to the neo-Kantian aspect of Habermas's work. There are also essays relevant to the current foundations debate within Continental philosophy, and the rationality/relativism question is sustained throughout the volume.

In 1998 the journal Theoretical Criminology published an innovative special issue on green criminology, which was compiled by two of the editors of the present collection. The focus of that special issue was a plea for the theoretical development of green criminological approaches to our relationships with 'nature', including how we adversely affect the state of the environment and the lives of nonhuman animals (henceforth, 'animals'). Work in this new field has since continued apace. The study of harms against humanity, the environment and other species – inflicted systematically by powerful profit-seeking entities and on an everyday basis by ordinary people – is increasingly seen as a social concern of extraordinary importance. This article explores research that, by definition or in practice, is conducted by the social science community at the international level. International research contrasts with most social science research, which is conducted within state boundaries by scholars who work on projects individually or in small groups. A survey of key research quality gatekeepers reveals a diverse range of international research activities in the UK, across all the disciplines, as well as extensive collaborative links with scholars around the world. Evidence of the characteristics present in research that transcends national and local limitations is presented, and revealing judgements about the comparative quality of international research in the social sciences emerge. This evidence also puts into perspective the common view that the USA is the world leader in social science research. Furthermore, it shows that international social science is currently limited, but has the potential to host massive projects. (Original abstract)
