(IP)

Tiefe Risse in der Demokratie. Der Populismus als Faktor der ostmitteleuropaischen Politik
In: Internationale Politik: das Magazin für globales Denken, Band 61, Heft 5, S. 23-29
ISSN: 1430-175X
The populist offshoots of recent years in Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, & Slovakia did not appear with full membership & are in no way only friction of the transformation phase, but rather reflect deep cracks in democracy that can be clearly seen in the last few years in Poland. Kaczynski does not symbolize successful government, but rather anger of a large portion of Polish society against the state, & he destroys the democratic state by maintaining this anger at a constant level against ever new enemies. Though he will eventually fail, the consequences of his actions include a dangerous erosion of pluralisms in government institutions & above all displacement of the losers of transformation from rational politics. Populism replaced left & right totalitarian ideologies & articulates the growing tension between rich & poor, center & periphery, & government & the governed. At least in eastern & middle Europe populism remains a factor in politics, irrespective of how long any individual populist leader is remembered. L. Reed
Bildersprache und Politik. Uber die deutsch-tschenchische Bewaltigung der Vergangenheit
In: Internationale Politik: das Magazin für globales Denken, Band 61, Heft 5, S. 49-51
ISSN: 1430-175X
For decades, the relationship between Czechs & Germans has been poisoned by the handling of the historical expulsion of Germans, though two years after admittance of the Czech Republic to the EU, this phase seems to have passed & the Collegium Bohemicum in Usti nad Labem/Aussig will soon cast a thorough look at the complex history of Germans in Bohemia. Today the past is no longer threatening, as both Germany & the Czech Republic face the common threat of globalization, & the Czechs have found inner peace through historical context & a focus on humanity, sympathy, & cultural service rather than war, valuing the services of a very industrious & cultured minority without denying their support of the NS regime. The museum seeks a picture language that will mediate this content believably to the Czech public. L. Reed
