"The Portuguese Colonial War and the African Liberation Struggles: Memory, Politics and Uses of the Past presents a critical and comparative analysis on the memory of the colonial and liberation wars that led to the independence of five new African countries: Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe. Covering more than six decades and based on original archival research, critical analysis of sources and interviews, the book offers the first plural account of the public memorialization of this contested past Lusophone Africa, focusing on diachronic and synchronic processes of mnemonic production. This innovative exercise highlights the changing and crossed nature of political memories and social representations through time, emphasizing three modes of mnemonic intersections: the intersection of distinct historical times; the intersection between multiple products and practices of memory; and the intersection connecting the different countries and national histories. "Most histories of economic life explore how markets are built. This book looks instead at how they have been dismantled. Soon after the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia, they began the process of transforming the economy, and indeed all of society, in accordance with communist ideology. Asserting their authority and creating a Soviet republic involved confiscating property and demolishing existing systems of exchanging goods. At a national level, industries like transport and banking were brought under state control. At the local level, everything from apartments to personal possessions were subject to seizure. In analyzing the confiscation of property and its redistribution, historian Anne O'Donnell focuses on the lived experience of revolution, drawing upon archival sources such as popular petitions, neighborhood meeting transcripts, audits of state agencies, and testimony in court cases. Telling the stories of both people who were dispossessed and the bureaucrats who inventoried and managed the property that now belonged to the state, O'Donnell reveals the making of an illiberal state, arguing that Soviet statecraft was built upon imperfect attempts to install new forms of valuation consistent with communist principles through chaotic property seizures. "What does compliance with judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) look like in states on the spectrum of democratisation? This work provides an in-depth investigation of three such states-Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia- in the wider context of the growing 'implementation crisis' in Europe, and does so through a combined lens of theoretical insights and rich empirical data.
