Aufgrund eines US/EU-Waffenembargos ist China seit 1989 vom Handel mit den führenden Waffenproduzenten – mit Ausnahme Russlands und der Ukraine – ausgeschlossen. Eine bis Anfang 2014 bestehende militärisch-industrielle Symbiose zwischen der Ukraine und Russland wiederum kam als Folge der russischen Besetzung der Krim zu einem abrupten Ende. Dieser plötzliche Abbruch sämtlicher verteidigungsindustrieller Beziehungen bietet der Forschung nun die unerwartete Chance, die Besonderheiten transnationaler Waffenproduktion und deren strategische Implikationen unter Krisenbedingungen zu untersuchen. China wird wahrscheinlich von der neuen Situation profitieren können, während die westlichen Sanktionen gegen China und gegen Russland gegenwärtig Anreize für beide Staaten schaffen, ihre bilaterale strategische Zusammenarbeit weiter zu vertiefen.
