Focusing on the life and work of José Manuel Groot this article attempts to identify and analyze the objective and subjective factors as well as the political and social aspects that characterized, inspired, and justified the journalistic, literary, artistic, and historiographical production of the Colombian catholic writers in the second half of the nineteenth century. The text begins with a brief sketch of the transformation of nineteenth century Catholicism in Colombia during the liberal hegemony. Then it focuses on the channels and spaces that these intellectuals used for the diffusion of their works and for strengthening the social ties among them. The third part of the article deals with the specific functions that these writers assumed as theirs and with their struggle with Bogota's high clergy. To conclude I formulate some reflections about the autonomy and self-perception of the intellectuals, and on the importance of individual and collective trajectories in the history of Colombian intellectuals.

The purpose of this paper is to draw a map of the essential points of contact between religion and foreign policy in Poland during 2001-2020. The analytic studies have shown that the relationships between religion and Polish foreign policy could be observed in all the dimensions mentioned by the theoretical approaches, i.e. in the dimension of influence of religious ideas, religious entities and institutions, in the field of presence of religious elements on the agenda of foreign policy, and with reference to religious diplomacy. The impact of religious ideas was limited to the generally interpreted Christianity. Religious entities would strongly prefer to exert their influence from the level of meta-politics than to do this by direct means. Among all the institutions, only the electoral system played a relatively significant role in the introduction of religious components to foreign policy, yet only in the initial period. The presence of religious elements on the agenda of the foreign policy was not permanent and was actually limited to a few initiatives. Similarly, religious diplomacy does not seem to be a methodology that is deeply rooted in Poland's political culture, and it is not really accepted by the religious entities.

What is the role of the Church in politics? Is there a way to justify such role? This paper will explore the answer to this problem in the area of deliberative democracy, and will seek to strengthen the idea that political and democratic discourse may allow for religious arguments, if and only if these arguments also purport to express public values. To shed light onto this problem, I will bring into dialogue John Rawls and Jürgen Habermas, most especially with emphasis on their respective ideas concerning civil society, and hope to reconcile the role of politics and religion in Philippine democracy.

The Communist Party based its attitude to religion on Marxism-Leninism as a scientific and theoretical framework. As a critical theory of the capitalist society Marxism examined the phenomenon of religion and religious feelings in civil society and designed a project of a future socialist society. One can say that Marxism looks at the phenomenon of religion from the angle of a class society, from a materialistic viewpoint and while using the historical research method. The source of religion is in man's alienation first from himself, then from other people and, finally, from society itself. Marxism surpasses the criticisms of religion dating back to the Enlightenment as well as the vulgar-marxist criticisms that associated religion and religious feeling with human ignorance and delusion. Marxism places religion into the historical framework including the social and economic setting which is changing, developing and thus producing or bringing about changes in religious consciousness. In their practice, the Communist Party of Yugoslavia or what was later the League of Communists of Yugoslavia had an attitude to religion and the church that was a mixture of some original Marxism but also, in much larger measure, of dogmatic, Leninist-Marxist and most often administrative –pragmatic stands which suited the then balance of political power in the state or at lower administrative levels. This attitude was also conditioned by the situation in the party, the state, Yugoslavia's international position, the situation in the church, etc. In this context, one can say that in the actual laws and regulations governing the legal status of the church and the issue of the religious rights and liberties of citizens the atheist approach predominated, i.e. the approach that was solely and exclusively determined in relation to God. This approach seems to have predominated due to the negative experience gained by the workers' movement in Yugoslavia between the two World Wars as well as during the course of the Second World War when the majority of church activists adopted a negative attitude to the National Liberation Movement (NLM). The process of atheization which was launched immediately following the end of the Second World War, in addition to formally playing a major role in establishing and giving legitimacy to the new social system of government, was also ongoing, in terms of its attitude to the churches, on at least two levels: 1) depoliticization of all religious communities; and 2) supression of the idea that religious attributes should be identified as national attributes in the established and traditional churches and religious communities (Serbian Orthodox Church, Roman Catholic Church, Islamic Religious Community).

"An Introduction to Religion and Politics offers a comprehensive overview of the many theories of religion and politics, and provides students with an accessible but in-depth account of the most significant debates, issues and methodologies. Fox examines the ways in which religion influences politics, analyses the current key issues and provides a state of the art account of religion and politics, highlighting the diversity in state religion policies around the world. Topics covered include: Secularism and secularization ; Religious identity ; Religious worldviews, beliefs, doctrines and theologies ; Religious legitimacy ; Religious institutions and mobilization ; Rational and functional religion ; Religious fundamentalism ; Conflict, violence and terror. This work combines theoretical analysis with data on the religion policies of 177 governments, showing that while most of the world's government support religion and many restrict it; true neutrality on the issue of religion is extremely rare. Religion is becoming an inescapable issue in politics. This work will be essential reading for all students of religion and politics, and will also be of great interest to those studying related subjects such as comparative politics, international relations and war and conflict studies."--Publisher's website.

In this presumably secular age it may astound many people that religion is still one of the primary components of voting behavior. But how else can one explain facts such as these: German Catholic communities in North Dakota gave Kennedy over 90 per cent of their votes but gave Stevenson less than 25 per cent. A German Catholic precinct in Wisconsin gave Kennedy a comfortable 63 per cent but has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since. A German Lutheran precinct in Wisconsin went for Stevenson but gave Kennedy less than a fourth of its votes. Three Baptist precincts in Roosevelt County, New Mexico, gave Stevenson comfortable majorities but Kennedy less than a third.
Most Americans are religious believers. Among these there is disagreement about many fundamental religious/moral matters. Because the United States is both such a religious country and such a religiously pluralistic country, the issue of the proper role of religion in politics is extremely important to political debate. In Religion in Politics, Michael Perry addresses a fundamental question: what role may religious arguments play, if any, either in public debate about what political choices to make or as a basis of political choice? He is principally concerned with political choices that ban o
