AbstractThe deep sea, the largest ocean's compartment, drives planetary-scale biogeochemical cycling. Yet, the functional exploration of its microbial communities lags far behind other environments. Here we analyze 58 metagenomes from tropical and subtropical deep oceans to generate the Malaspina Gene Database. Free-living or particle-attached lifestyles drive functional differences in bathypelagic prokaryotic communities, regardless of their biogeography. Ammonia and CO oxidation pathways are enriched in the free-living microbial communities and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium and H2 oxidation pathways in the particle-attached, while the Calvin Benson-Bassham cycle is the most prevalent inorganic carbon fixation pathway in both size fractions. Reconstruction of the Malaspina Deep Metagenome-Assembled Genomes reveals unique non-cyanobacterial diazotrophic bacteria and chemolithoautotrophic prokaryotes. The widespread potential to grow both autotrophically and heterotrophically suggests that mixotrophy is an ecologically relevant trait in the deep ocean. Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a highly malignant neuroendocrine tumor of the skin whose molecular pathogenesis is not completely understood, despite the role that Merkel cell polyomavirus can play in 55e90% of cases. To study potential mechanisms driving this disease in clinically characterized cases, we searched for somatic mutations using whole-exome sequencing, and extrapolated our findings to study functional biomarkers reporting on the activity of the mutated pathways. Confirming previous results, Merkel cell polyomavirus-negative tumors had higher mutational loads with UV signatures and more frequent mutations in TP53 and RB compared with their Merkel cell polyomavirus-positive counterparts. Despite important genetic differences, the two Merkel cell carcinoma etiologies both exhibited nuclear accumulation of oncogenic transcription factors such as NFAT or nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT), P-CREB, and P-STAT3, indicating commonly deregulated pathogenic mechanisms with the potential to serve as targets for therapy. In the Baroque period, man fell into a state of existential heaviness, not only at the economic, political and social level, but was constituted at a time that plunged him into an existential crisis; the baroque man, discovered and wrote with horror, on the ephemeral condition of the human species. But not only the man of the Baroque has been concerned with the finite and definitive passage of man on earth, also civilizations such as the Greek, the Roman, the Egyptian, and closer to us, the Incas, the Mayas and the Aztecs, They have worshiped the passage of time, even created their own ways of recording it, their own calendars and kept a record of what they were living. I dare say that the difficulty does not lie in the physical marks left by the inescapable, the inevitable passage of time; I dare to affirm that the problem is not to leave positive traces, in not leaving any praiseworthy trace, nor a pleasant mark "no wake in the sea", in the words of Machado, on anything, or on anyone.

El libro que presentamos es producto de una reflexión colectiva realizada en Quito, Ecuador, en abril de 2014, mediante un seminario que involucró a los Grupos de Trabajo del Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales (Clacso) "Integración regional y unidad latinoamericana y caribeña" y "Estudios sobre Estados Unidos", y al Instituto de Altos Estudios Nacionales (IAEN) en el marco del Programa Democracias en Revolución, Revoluciones en Democracia. Esta iniciativa es parte de los esfuerzos del Área de Grupos de Trabajo (GT) de Clacso por articular a los grupos, identificando ejes transversales y promoviendo los intercambios, a la vez que produciendo alianzas colaborativas con instituciones de la región que enriquezcan y amplifiquen la producción de los GT, y de esta forma contribuir al pensamiento colectivo y transformador.

The Cuban Twin Registry is a nation-wide, prospective, population-based twin registry comprising all zygosity types and ages. It was initiated in 2004 to study genetic and environmental contributions to complex diseases with high morbidity and mortality in the Cuban population. The database contains extensive information from 55,400 twin pairs enrolled in the period 2004–2006. Additionally, 2,600 new multiple births have been included from 2007 to date. In the past 4 years, more than 130 studies have been carried out using the registry with a classical genetic epidemiological approach in which concordance rates for monozygotic and dizygotic twins and heritability of various disease traits were estimated. This article summarizes the history, registry's methodology, recent research findings, and future directions of work.

Este libro recoge el proceso de reconstrucción participativa de siete experiencias de acción política con participación de jóvenes, desarrollado en el marco del proyecto de investigación "Experiencias alternativas de acción política con participación de jóvenes1". La problematización que dio origen a este proceso de investigación tiene que ver con el reconocimiento de la existencia de dos tendencias de análisis frente a la relación política-juventud: una de carácter estadocéntrico, formal e institucional que describe y explica la vinculación de los y las jóvenes a los sistemas formales de la política asociados principalmente a la conducta de voto y a su vinculación con la formulación de la política pública; y otra, de carácter sociocéntrico y cultural que analiza las identidades, organizaciones y movimientos de jóvenes centrándose en la interpretación de categorías culturales, comunicativas, mediáticas y estéticas como expresiones políticas juveniles. En el marco de esta polarización, el estudio buscó comprender: ¿cómo se vinculan los y las jóvenes a experiencias de acción política que logran instituir dinámicas alternativas de construcción de país frente a acontecimientos socio-históricos y políticos significativos de la última década en Colombia? De esta manera, el proyecto se constituyó en una apuesta por crear un espacio de indagación, análisis y construcción de sentidos; desde el cual, nombráramos y dialogáramos con otras formas de acción política que, al ser diluidas en su carácter minoritario y micronarrativo por las hegemonías de los discursos imperantes, terminaban siendo veladas en su poder de afectación transformadora del orden instituido. Así, la principal atención de la comunidad académica que desarrolló esta propuesta investigativa se centró en la relación entre objetos como: los procesos de formación y socialización, y la juventud y la configuración de subjetividades alrededor del campo del conocimiento político. Por consiguiente, la investigación puede ser leída en dos sentidos: como un ejercicio de visibilización y enunciación de los y las jóvenes como sujetos sociales fundantes en las dinámicas de configuración de acciones políticas erigidas desde la disidencia, y como un reconocimiento a su participación instituyente en la construcción de otras lógicas de poder. El Centro de Estudios Económicos Regionales (CEER) fue el primer esfuerzo del Banco de la República para descentralizar la investigación económica, la cual tenía como único centro de operaciones la oficina principal en Bogotá. Es así como en 1997, se puso en marcha el primer centro regional en la sucursal de Cartagena. Inicialmente fue llamado Centro de Investigaciones Económicas del Caribe y luego, en 2001, se convierte en Centro de Estudios Económicos Regionales (CEER), realizando estudios de todas las regiones del país. En 2017, con motivo de la celebración de los 20 años de existencia del CEER, se decidió adelantar un proyecto en el que participarían un grupo de destacados investigadores y estudiosos de la realidad Caribe. El propósito de tal proyecto era realizar un balance de la evolución y principales investigaciones durante las dos últimas décadas en seis dimensiones en particular: Historiografía, Estudios Económicos y Sociales, Arqueología, Estructuras Políticas, Cultura y algunos de los Carnavales y Festivales más populares en la región.

Desde hace más de una década, el Grupo de Trabajo "Estudios sobre Estados Unidos" se ha caracterizado por concentrar su análisis crítico en el devenir de las transformaciones de la sociedad estadounidense, tanto en su dinámica interna como en su interacción con otros actores de la comunidad internacional, y especialmente de América Latina y el Caribe. Debido a la volatilidad e imprevisibilidad de las decisiones y acciones llevadas a cabo por Donald Trump desde que llegó al poder en Washington, consideramos urgente y necesario presentar esta nueva publicación, que se concentra en su primer año y medio en la Casa Blanca.

In silico analysis of functional annotations demonstrated cis-eQTL effects of such SNPs likely due to the modification of binding motif sites for relevant transcription factors of the spermatogenic process. The findings reported here shed light on the molecular mechanisms leading to severe phenotypes of idiopathic male infertility, and may help to better understand the contribution of the common genetic variation to the development of these conditions. ; publishersversion ; published

Ante la transición de Santiago de Cali a Distrito Especial, Deportivo, Cultural, Turístico, Empresarial y de Servicios en agosto de 2018 a través de la Ley 1933, surgen oportunidades y retos para la ciudad y su administración en términos del fortalecimiento institucional en el territorio, el desarrollo de nuevas funciones para niveles locales de gobierno, el enfoque mismo de las problemáticas que entrarían a ser parte del campo de acción del Alcalde Mayor y la relación del Distrito frente al Gobierno Nacional en torno a las temáticas que impulsarán la transformación a su nueva condición [Propacífico]. Las grandes metrópolis latinoamericanas en su proceso de crecimiento han adoptado diferentes estructuras administrativas buscando responder tanto a su relacionamiento con otros entes territoriales adyacentes como a su estrategia interna y a su modelo de relacionamiento con el ciudadano.
