"This book explains complex scientific concepts using simple and understandable illustrations and practical examples. For example, the competition between countries in the world economy is compared to motor racing, time savings are illustrated through the example of a masquerade ball, and the cyclical effect of time on the economy is reflected through the prism of changing seasons. It presents amazing phenomena and processes of economic time, including "economic vintage", "the time machine in the economy", "youth" and "old age" of the economy, its "growing up", "the economic calendar", "catching up", and "forward-looking" development. This book will therefore be interesting not only to members of the scientific community but also to non-academic readers - to everyone who wants to understand the nature of economic time."
"This book explores whether the legal and political institutions of Afghanistan have been able to incorporate diverse ethnic groups into the political process. Ethnic accommodation has gained central stage in literature on institutional design and democratic consolidation. However, some divided societies are more explored than others and Afghanistan is one that is critically important for our theories of institutional design in a democratizing, plural society. The work examines the constitution and those provisions of electoral laws and political party laws that together have devised Afghan political institutions including those of the presidential system, unitary government, electoral systems as well as the party system. It argues that due to their incongruence in design and effects, the Afghan political institutions have failed to fully accommodate ethnic groups in the political process. It adopts a holistic approach, while also paying careful attention to the details of each of the individual pieces. Taken together, this approach yields insights about the boundaries and interactions of institutional design. The book will be essential reading for academics, researchers and policy makers interested in constitutional law and politics"--
Self-Determination as Voice addresses the relationship between Indigenous peoples' participation in international governance and the law of self-determination. Many states and international organizations have put in place institutional mechanisms for the express purpose of including Indigenous representatives in international policy-making and decision-making processes, as well as in the negotiation and drafting of international legal instruments. Indigenous peoples' rights have a higher profile in the UN system than ever before. This book argues that the establishment and use of mechanisms and policies to enable a certain level of Indigenous peoples' participation in international governance has become a widespread practice, and perhaps even one that is accepted as law. In theory, the law of self-determination supports this move, and it is arguably emerging as a rule of customary international law. However, ultimately the achievement of the ideal of full and effective participation, in a manner that would fulfil Indigenous peoples' right to self-determination, remains deferred

Born a slave in Alabama, C.H.J. Taylor became an influential, but highly controversial, figure in the history of African American conservatism in the late nineteenth century. Taylor was Recorder of Deeds for the District of Columbia in Democratic President Grover Cleveland's first administration. His nomination in Cleveland's second administration as Minister to Bolivia, considered a "white" country, was hailed as a break with the Democratic Party's racist past. This book follows Taylor's career as a journalist, orator, and political organizer during the crucial years from the end of Reconstruction to the birth of the modern civil rights movement. His view that poverty, not white racism, was the principal barrier to Black advancement, and his struggle to increase the influence of the Black vote by recruiting Blacks to vote Democratic, brought him into lively encounters with such leading figures as Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, and Theodore Roosevelt

"The book is a seminal contribution from a leading futurist who, over the past three decades, has explored each of the most disruptive forces shaping our world today, including emerging technologies, entrepreneurship, venture investments, and industrial manufacturing. Eco Tech brings all this thinking together, fusing insight from thought leaders with the author's own considerable experience, to explore scenarios for 2050 and discuss eco-effectiveness as an established practice for governments, corporations, startups, and individuals. Trond Undheim begins by providing a brief history of sustainability and provides simple definitions for key terms including eco-efficiency, life cycle analysis, industrial ecology, cleantech, net zero, climate change, biodiversity, and carbon capture, which will enable the reader to engage confidently in eco-discussions. Undheim also explores the ambitions of regeneration and offers a new conceptual framework to facilitate future discussion around sustainable innovation. He applies this framework to green, ambitious start-ups and examines the way these ventures will lead the way towards an eco-effective society, drawing on stories from exciting founders who are already changing the world. Finally, the book takes a deep dive into emerging eco-innovations, including batteries, bioplastics, distributed energy, space tech, and futuristic megaprojects. The book contains clear directions on how to progress through adversity and avoid returning to the status quo. The book will be an essential guide for executives, sustainability professionals and energy tech investors who are deeply concerned with the future and are prepared to both significantly invest in it and make behavioral changes to foster regenerative development. It will also be a great resource for students and scholars of sustainable investing and innovation"--
