This paper explores some of the critical debates in social science research methods education and is set out in three parts. The first section introduces the importance and relevance of research methods to the social sciences. It then outlines the problems and challenges experienced in the teaching and learning of research methods, which are particularly acute in the case of quantitative methods. The second part of the paper provides an overview of the policy activity and pedagogic solutions presented in response to the context introduced in the first part. This section explains how the practice of research method teaching is changing and accounts for the trends of using pedagogies informed by constructivist learning theory and embedding methods in the substantive curriculum. The third section identifies three critical debates emanating from the two previous sections. First an appraisal of applicability of constructivist pedagogies, second the case for holistic curriculum design across a whole degree programme, and third, an analysis of the relevancy of efforts to strengthen the nexus between research and teaching.

AbstractThe principles that guide the practice of the author and the reasons for them are presented. These principles have been extracted from 40 years of applying the systems sciences to managerial problems in practitioner—client relationships. These principles focus on the role of the practitioner in encouraging and facilitating the development of the relevant stakeholders during an engagement. This is done primarily through participative idealized redesign of the system which has the problems being addressed. What the practitioner must bring to the design process, his or her personal relationships with the responsible decision maker, and 'selling' are among the other aspects of practice that are discussed.

Depuis plusieurs décennies, les chercheurs en sciences sociales se sont très largement engagés dans la voie du nominalisme épistémologique, allant jusqu'à nier l'existence d'une réalité sociale objective, indépendante de toute observation, de toute description ou de toute interprétation. Une telle attitude contribue à démobiliser collectivement les chercheurs qui pensent que la pluralité théorique est irréductible, qu'aucune synthèse intégratrice ni aucune cumulativité scientifique ne sont atteignables, et que l'idée de dégager des lois, des principes ou des invariants concernant le monde social est une folie positiviste d'un autre âge. Social science research progress is seriously threatened by a host of contemporary external forces, which are inextricably woven with factors internal to the social sciences. The array of external threats includes: decreasing support for social science research, restrictions on access to data, privatization of public research, & politicization of professional processes associated with research support. Alternative explanations for these recent events are explored from the perspective of current economic conditions, prevailing partisan ideology, the complex nature of the social sciences, & the evolution of social science qua science. 23 References. This article analyzes opinions about abortion, racial, and social welfare policies, comparing their determinants among citizens with different levels of political information over the past several decades. Hypothesizing that growing elite partisan polarization may have exacerbated the political implications of differences in political awareness, the authors examine how increasing clarity of party -- policy linkages among political elites influences party -- policy linkages in the mass public. The results show that only the well informed responded to the growing elite polarization by becoming more partisan in their opinions. Apparently, in the absence of the motivation to develop coherent opinions, even a simplification of the political environment does not close the gaps between those who are more and less aware about politics. Das Wissen in der Modernität oder : Wie ist Wissen und Nicht-Wissen zu behandeln ?
In den Analysen unserer Zeit wird unser Wissen in Frage gestellt, ganz gleich, ob es sich um unsere Kenntnisse der Modernität oder das Wissen im allgemeinen handelt. Dies bedeutet gleichzeitig, den Zweifel und das Nicht-Wissen in unser Wissen wieder-einzuführen. Der Begriff der Praxis schwingt bei dieser Infragestellung mit, einmal, weil er die Beziehung zwischen der Welt und ihrer Bedeutung aufdeckt, und zum andern, weil er eine Kombinierung von Wissen und Nicht-Wissen suggeriert. Die Überlegungen von P. Bourdieu, H.-P. Jeudy, I. Stengers und P. Watier über das Paar "Wissen und Nicht-Wissen" erlauben uns, verschiedene Gesichtspunkte herauszukristallisieren, die den Begriff "Praxis" in gewisser Weise erhellen. Der erste versucht, die Allwissenheit zu definieren und verfolgt damit den Traum der modernen Wissenschaften. Der zweite wendet sich eher der Klangwirkung als dem eigentlichen Wissen selbst zu. Der dritte will die Demokratie einsetzen, um die wissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse unter Beweis zu stellen und deren Fehler zu bekämpfen. Der letzte schließlich geht von einer besonderen Verbindung zwischen Wissen und Nicht-Wissen aus, die eine neues Weltbild schaffen könnte.

The review analyzes a new cognitive trend in the social sciences and humanities. It is argued that digital communication technologies, which have formed a global information society with an unprecedented level of social self-organization, have created a public demand for a broad democratization of knowledge. It is shown that in response to this demand, social and human sciences are forced to adjust their theoretical, methodological and methodical tools accordingly.

The role of UNESCO in international social science education, research, & training is outlined. To face recent changes in Europe, innovative research orientations should be developed. Suggested are: (1) extensive interdisciplinarity & comparative approaches; (2) identification & conceptualization of new research tools; & (3) improved collaborative research organizations. Ce volume rassemble les contributions présentées lors de la première journée de réflexion organisée par la commission d'éthique de la recherche de la Faculté des sciences de la société en février 2017. Cette journée visait à développer et renforcer une sensibilité aux questions d'éthique parmi les chercheur.euse.s affilié.e.s à la faculté, mais aussi à contribuer au développement de compétences pratiques et adaptées aux besoins des chercheur.euse.s en sciences sociales. Mettant en évidence les tensions existant entre une éthique standardisée et la diversité des démarches de recherche adoptées en sciences sociales, ces contributions invitent à réfléchir aux enjeux éthiques se déclinant à toutes les étapes de la recherche. Suite à une conférence d'ouverture appelant à une éthique située, ancrée dans les contextes sociaux, politiques et économiques de la recherche, trois ateliers thématiques ont été organisés autour des propositions formulées en réponse à l'appel à contributions lancé par la commission. Le premier atelier rend compte des questionnements générés par la soumission de protocoles de recherche auprès de comités d'éthique à orientation biomédicale, lesquelles encadrent aujourd'hui un certain nombre de travaux en sciences sociales. Le deuxième atelier a porté sur les enjeux des méthodes visuelles, pour lesquelles questions éthiques et juridiques s'entremêlent autour de l'utilisation des images. Le troisième atelier a quant à lui abordé les rapports de pouvoir – ascendants ou descendants – entre chercheur.euse.s et enquêté.e.s, invitant à privilégier des dispositifs de recherche participatifs, susceptibles de réduire de tels rapports de domination. Ces contributions balisent un champ de réflexion qui se développe au-delà de notre faculté tout en aidant à définir les différentes fonctions que peut remplir sa commission d'éthique de la recherche.
