Both the growing number of US testators & the increased amount of money involved in their intergenerational transfers suggest the need to identify their motivations, since existing patterns of social stratification both within & across familial groups are affected. Based on secondary analyses of existing data, three motivations -- pursuit of efficiency, commitment to reciprocity, & search for ascriptive equality -- & their social determinants are identified. A research agenda is proposed to assess their distributions in the US population & evaluate their implications for existing patterns of inequality. Findings should enhance understandings of dynamics governing the interaction between economic & cultural capital. 88 References. Adapted from the source document.
