BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy can lead to reduced vaccine uptake and hinder the safe relaxation of other public health measures. This study aims to explore the factors associated with vaccine hesitancy and uptake among adults before and after the implementation of the COVID-19 vaccination program in Hong Kong. METHODS: Cross-sectional telephone surveys were conducted every four weeks over a nine-month period from November 2020 through July 2021. Target respondents were Hong Kong resident aged 18 or above and recruited by random-digit dialling. In each survey, responses on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and COVID-19 vaccine uptake were collected as primary and secondary outcomes, respectively. Data of potentially associated factors, including socio-demographics, chronic medical conditions, perceived risk of COVID-19, perceived personal efficacy in self-protection, confidence in the government's ability to control the pandemic, compliance with social distancing measures, and confidence in COVID-19 vaccines, were also collected. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy at different time points. FINDINGS: Ten cross-sectional surveys were conducted, including 7411 respondents. The levels of vaccine hesitancy fluctuated over time. From December 2020 to May 2021, the age group with the highest vaccine hesitancy was young adults 18–34y, while the vaccine hesitancy was highest among adults ≥ 65y in June-July 2021 (Fig. 2C). Our regression analyses (Fig. 3) showed that before and at the beginning of the rollout of the mass vaccination program, there was no statistically significant association between chronic medical conditions and vaccine hesitancy. However, two-five months after the program implementation respondents with chronic medical conditions were more likely to be hesitant. From January to June 2021, higher confidence in the government was associated with lower vaccine hesitancy (Fig. 3). Confidence in COVID-19 vaccines was ...
This proposal is part of a greater thesis, but the specific proposal here will entail the specific defeat of Victorio around the Mexican American border lands region. Victorio was a warm springs Apache, which was part of the Chiricahua group. The time frame will be late summer 1880 to mid-October 1880. The paper will argue that the increased militarization of the Mexican American border in late summer until mid-October 1880 resulted in the death and defeat of Victorio. It will argue that the despite this increased militarization the border was still soft enough to allow him to cross easily avoiding both the Americans, and Mexicans pursuing him. The border around mid-September 1880 was finally closed enough to prevent him from escaping across the other side. This was due to a cross border campaign that allowed the Americans into Mexico to help the Mexican army defeat Victorio. The Americans were asked to leave before he was defeated, but their presence before that event was enough to help influence Victorio's defeat. The paper will include numerous illegal border crossings on part of the Americans, and cooperation on part of Mexico with America. Those activities will show that both sides knew only a cross border campaign was the way to defeat Victorio. PART OF SESSION 2C. INDIAN WARS: Comment: J. William T. Abstract: Davy Crockett's Almanacs, published between 1835 and 1856, have been held as a prime example of nineteenth-century Anglo-American folklore. While authors have commented on their comic qualities and racist content, what has been lacking is a rhetorical analysis, as suggested by Folklorist Stephen Gencarella, which would examine the ways in which "folklore is not something that a folk does, rather… something which constitutes a folk." This paper analyzes the almanac stories dealing with native peoples in order to understand the political and ideological discourse that was propagated by these publications. Rather than genuine folk-stories faithfully recorded by publishers, these almanacs were creations of popular culture, distributed to a wide audience and composed with specific economic and nationalistic goals. Their purpose, in addition to generating profit, was to serve as a form of cultural hegemony for their urban middleclass readership by creating a literary fantasy that had broad appeal among Anglo-Americans and might be considered an early form of white American nationalism. Unlike the historical David Crockett, whose relations with native peoples were more ambivalent, the fictional Crockett of the Almanacs was an unapologetic nativist and terrorizer who sought nothing less than the white racial domination of North America. The intimate link between soil moisture and precipitation makes it a "chicken-and-egg situation" that challenges climate studies of the continental water cycle. This association is particularly acute over the Mediterranean, increasingly exposed to droughts with climate change. This study aims at deciphering the impact of spring soil moisture state in the Mediterranean on subsequent warm season precipitation. In an idealized setup, two distinct climate models are used to generate extreme dry or wet soil conditions, and run climate simulations initialized and/or forced by these conditions. Changes in precipitation distribution and persistence are analyzed and where applicable compared to composites from a reanalysis. Spring soil moisture anomalies are found to be very persistent, but the precipitation response is largely model dependent. Overall, dry soils lead to a reduction of precipitation for early summer months and conversely for wet soils although with a fainter and less robust signal. On the other hand, wet soils tend to favor the persistence of precipitation throughout summer over several sub-regions. Our results highlight the stringent need to reduce the wide array of uncertainties associated to soil moisture, land-atmosphere coupling and convection in climate models, before ascertaining that soil moisture initialization could provide more skillful sub-seasonal to seasonal precipitation prediction. ; This work is a contribution to the HyMeX program through the project ERA4CS-MEDSCOPE, co-funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework Program of the European Union (Grant agreement 690462). Iridaceae is one of the largest Asparagales families with over 2030 species. Besides a wide morphological variation, this family presents great karyological variation including many polyploid taxa. Sisyrinchium is restricted to the New World and it holds a large amount of cytological data. Despite its importance in providing critical evidence to understand processes involved in genome evolution, cytological data is lacking for most of South American species of Sisyrinchium. Therefore, the present work aims to identify and characterize chromosome evolutionary trends among Sisyrinchium taxa of sect. Viperella. Chromosome numbers and genome sizes (GS) were determined for 16 and 17 taxa, respectively, from sect. Viperella; all reported here for the first time, except for S. alatum. Meiotic behavior, tetrad normality, pollen viability and morphology were also analyzed and revealed regular meiosis, high meiotic indexes and pollen viability (> 87%), except for Sisyrinchium sp. nov. aff. alatum (22.70%). The GS and chromosome number obtained were plotted onto a phylogenetic frame to identify transitions between character states and to locate where these transitions occurred throughout this group's evolution. Based on our results, we suggest that the ancestral chromosome number for sect. Viperella is 2n = 18 and two independent polyploidization events occurred. Lower DNA content (2.17 ? 2C ? 2.97 pg) was the ancestral condition from which six major events took place towards GS increase. Despite the stability in base chromosome number (x = 9), evolutionary changes in karyotypes of this section involve primarily variation in DNA amount regardless of ploidy level, and secondly polyploidy and variation in chromosome size. Combining GS and chromosome number with molecular phylogeny, our data provides the first scenario for karyotype and genome evolution in Sisyrinchium, sect. Viperella, allowing us to suggest that mechanisms other than polyploidy were responsible for GS increase among these taxa.
Since the implementation of several legislations to improve pediatric drug research, more pediatric clinical trials are being performed. In order to optimize these pediatric trials, adequate preclinical data are necessary, which are usually obtained by juvenile animal models. The growing piglet has been increasingly suggested as a potential animal model due to a high degree of anatomical and physiological similarities with humans. However, physiological data in pigs on the ontogeny of major organs involved in absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs are largely lacking. The aim of this study was to unravel the ontogeny of porcine hepatic drug metabolizing cytochrome P450 enzyme (CYP450) activities as well as protein abundances. Liver microsomes from 16 conventional pigs (8 males and 8 females) per age group: 2 days, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 6–7 months were prepared. Activity measurements were performed with substrates of major human CYP450 enzymes: midazolam (CYP3A), tolbutamide (CYP2C), and chlorzoxazone (CYP2E). Next, the hepatic scaling factor, microsomal protein per gram liver (MPPGL), was determined to correct for enzyme losses during the fractionation process. Finally, protein abundance was determined using proteomics and correlated with enzyme activity. No significant sex differences within each age category were observed in enzyme activity or MPPGL. The biotransformation rate of all three substrates increased with age, comparable with human maturation of CYP450 enzymes. The MPPGL decreased from birth till 8 weeks of age followed by an increase till 6–7 months of age. Significant sex differences in protein abundance were observed for CYP1A2, CYP2A19, CYP3A22, CYP4V2, CYP2C36, CYP2E_1, and CYP2E_2. Midazolam and tolbutamide are considered good substrates to evaluate porcine CYP3A/2C enzymes, respectively. However, chlorzoxazone is not advised to evaluate porcine CYP2E enzyme activity. The increase in biotransformation rate with age can be attributed to an increase in absolute amount of ...

ABSTRACT: Northern Ireland's external trading relations for 2011–22 were analysed using the NISRA 'Northern Ireland economic trade statistics'. The major geographical markets were considered: Northern Ireland itself, Ireland, Great Britain (GB), rest of EU and rest of the world. In volume terms exports and external sales of goods declined during 2011–22. There was considerable growth of services. Trade integration between Northern Ireland and Ireland was considered as one indicator of the all-island economy. For both goods and services, especially the former, Northern Ireland sales to Ireland outgrew those going to GB during 2011–22. Potential explanations were considered: development of cross-border supply chains, impact on aggregate figures of the closure/contraction of a small number of larger firms and InterTradeIreland interventions. Data for 2021 and 2022 were used to consider the impact of the Protocol: more rapid growth in Northern Ireland purchases of goods from Ireland than from GB may indicate trade diversion.

Januar keine Mehrheit. ; This paper reviews the arguments against the ECB's extended asset purchase programme. It is shown that the main lines of arguments - arguments those suggesting that under current economic conditions it was not needed to pursue quantitative easing, and arguments those indicating that purchases of government bonds should be avoided in principle - do not add upmatch. However, the argumentation becomes compellent consistent when the underlying monetary theory is taken into account, as it implies a do- nothing monetary policy stance when infl ation rates are low. This theory was rejected on 22 January 2015, as it is inconsistent with the prevailing Governing Council defi nition of the ECB mandate.
