Australia is built upon a foundation of colonial conquest, and it continues to implement government policies and systems of management based on a colonising logic and the denial of Indigenous sovereignty. This study employed qualitative methods and discourse analysis to draw on the experiences of six non-Indigenous Australians employed by the South Australian Government in Aboriginal partnerships and natural resource management. Drawing on critical Whiteness studies, the article reveals that participants in this cohort are largely critical of colonial structures of government and the inequalities that arise. Despite this critical awareness, there was often a difficulty in finding a language to describe the fog of Whiteness, along with the tendency to describe ecological knowledge at the expense of more complex issues of First Nations sovereignty.

Along with other South-European countries, since 2008, Greece has experienced deep economic and social dislocation, leading to a crisis of representation and triggering populist mobilisations and anti-populist reactions. This article focuses on the antagonistic language games developed around populist representations, something that has not attracted much attention in the relevant literature. Highlighting the need to study anti-populism together with populism, focusing on their mutual constitution from a discursive perspective, it articulates a brief yet comprehensive genealogy of populist and anti-populist actors (parties and media) in Greece, exploring their discursive strategies. Moving on, it identifies the main characteristics this antagonistic divide took on within the newly contested, crisis-ridden sociopolitical field, highlighting the implications for a contemporary understanding of cleavages, with potentially broader implications.

A memoir that focuses on the complications of growing as the only daughter of a mother from Okinawa and a father from the United States. They met at a nightclub, where her mother worked as a waitress, outside an Army base, where her father was stationed during U.S. Military occupation of the island. These marriages between Okinawan women and U.S. Servicemen have been quite common since 1945, after the Battle of Okinawa, when a massive complex of bases was first established. Okinawan women must leave their homes and their families to follow their husbands to the United States, where they are faced with challenges of racism, language barriers and isolation. Their children often grow up rejecting and resenting their Okinawan identities, causing further alienation.

Il pamphlet rappresenta il mondo politico come alieno – per aspetto fisico, comportamenti, valori e linguaggio – a quello della classe operaia e configura perciò una War of the Classes. ; The article presents a multimodal analysis of the comic pamphlet Numsa Explains the National Development Plan, produced by the South African metalworkers' union (Numsa) to criticise a financial planning document issued by the government. The pamphlet portrays the political world as alien – in aspects such as physical appearance, behavior, values and language – to the world of the working class thus configuring a "War of the Classes".

This paper clarifies and extends our critical exploration of the use of war mobilisation as a policy model for rapid climate mitigation through accelerated energy transition. Our study, which appeared in this journal, presented a contingency scenario that focuses on the design of innovative policy model for mobilising finance, labour, and institutions, and their relative limitations. Kester and Sovacool expand the discussion of these limits from a securitization perspective—an extension work that is most welcome but contain incorrect interpretations of our paper. Here, we respond to it point by point and also acknowledge the points that they note regarding incongruences between contemporary climate action and wartime mobilisation. Central to this is a caveat on the use of combative and militaristic language in communicating climate action.

The spatial impact of socioeconomic determinants on the macro-level early developmental vulnerability of children was analyzed in this paper using Local Government Areas (LGAs) as samples. Five domains of developmental outcomes: physical, social, emotional, language and cognitive, and communication have been addressed as ordinal outcomes, and fitted by the proportional odds model. Areas with a high percentage of low-income, welfare dependent and single parent families significantly increased the proportion of vulnerable children in all five domains. Other factors that significantly affect some aspects of developmental vulnerability in children are participation of women in the labor market, availability of home Internet and unemployment rate in the locality. The macro-level results match with previous micro-level assessments showing the relationship between household socioeconomic features and childhood vulnerability.

Legislative compliance assessment tools are commonly used by companies to help them to understand their legal obligations. One of the primary limitations of existing tools is that they tend to consider each regulation in isolation. In this paper, we propose a flexible and modular compliance assessment framework that can support multiple legislations. Additionally, we describe our extension of the Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL) so that it can be used not only to represent digital rights but also legislative obligations, and discuss how the proposed model is used to develop a flexible compliance system, where changes to the obligations are automatically reflected in the compliance assessment tool. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach through the development of a General Data Protection Regulatory model and compliance assessment tool

This Paper is intended to show how one a single reality, that is International Politics and National Resilience, is presented and viewed by the two major of presidential candidates in 2014. In this paper, van Dijk's (2004) framework adopted form Politics, ideology and discourse is used identify the discursive structures within the transcription of political campaign debate and to find out the ideology underlying them. The macro strategies of 'positive self-representation' and 'negative other-representation' (which are intimately tied up with 'Polarization' of in group vs. out group ideologies or US-THEM) and more strategies become very accurate criteria for the evaluation of attitudes, and opinions. The findings of this study can conducive to expanding readers' critical thinking abilities in comprehension and production of language.

This article discusses the values of character education in the novel "Sepatu Dahlan" by Khrisna Pabichara. The theory used in this article is guided by the article Tarigan (2009), Ermanto (2012), Ulinnuha (2013), Karnasa (2013), Gusnetti (2014), Jalilihar et al. (2015), Kulkarni et al (2015), Tornberg (2016), Sriwimon (2017) Sanz (2017). This research was carried out with qualitative research with descriptive methods. The results showed that there were 15 characters of education found in the novel" Sepatu Dahlan" by Khrisna Pabichara, on the other hand, religious, honest, responsible, disciplined, hard work, creative, independent, democratic, curiosity, achievement, communicative, peaceful love, environment care, social care, and responsibility. Thus it can be concluded that novel "Sepatu Dahlan" can be implied in Indonesian language subjects in high school based on the 2013 curriculum.

Surprisingly little is known about agenda setting for international development in the United Nations (UN), despite it having a significant influence on the process and outcomes of development efforts. This paper addresses this shortcoming using a novel approach that applies natural language processing techniques to countries' annual statements in the UN General Debate. Every year UN member states deliver statements during the General Debate on their governments' perspective on major issues in world politics. These speeches provide invaluable information on state preferences on a wide range of issues, including international development, but have largely been overlooked in the study of global politics. This paper identifies the main international development topics that states raise in these speeches between 1970 and 2016, and examine the country-specific drivers of international development rhetoric.

Adrianoupolis, or with its current name Edime, was one of the most important cities of Thrace during the ancient era. Located in Eastern Thrace, in the area of the intersection of Hebrus River (Evros in Modern Greek, Meri9 in Modern Turkish and Maritsa in Slavic languages), Arda and Tunca rivers, Adrianoupolis, during the Roman era, was located on the heart of BelgradeSofia- Constantinople military road and maintained close connections with the nearby - 250 km far away - Byzantine capital. The city, during the ancient times was referred to by the names of Uskudama, Orestiada or Orestian respectively. (Samothrakis 1963: 15) Included in the Roman Empire borders in AD 46-47, the city was re-established by Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD 127 and given its new name after its founder: Hadrianopolis or Adrianoupolis.

This study compares the political discourses of Silvio Berlusconi and Jens Stoltenberg. These two politicians represent different political ideologies and belong to two different countries—and, hence, to different cultures. However, both of them were in power for a long time and almost in the same historical period. What kinds of differences and similarities can be found in the language used in their discourses when talking to people? Three discourses produced by each politician under similar circumstances are analyzed. This paper focuses on the lexical items used in the discourses, describing them from a quantitative (frequency) and qualitative point of view. The differences in the use of metaphors is explained by affiliation to two different cultures, whereas the lexical choice is often based on linguistic and individual properties.

Understandings of freedom are often discussed in moral, theological, legal and political terms, but they are not often set in a historical perspective, and they are even more rarely considered within their specific language context. From Homeric poems to contemporary works, the author traces the words that express the various notions of freedom in Classical Greek, Latin, and medieval and modern European idioms. Examining writers as varied as Plato, Aristotle, Luther, La Boétie, Hobbes, Rousseau, Kant, Stirner, Nietzsche, and Foucault among others, this theoretical mapping shows old and new boundaries of the horizon of freedom. The book suggests the possibility of transcending these boundaries on the basis of a different theorization of human interactions, which constructs individual and collective subjects as processes rather than entities.

El ensayo parte del análisis de la novela "Leviatán" de Paul Auster para reconstruir un contrapunto entre dos formas de concebir una práctica literaria crítica, políticamente comprometida, ligada a diferentes presupuestos acerca del autor, el lenguaje y el lector. A partir del análisis de esas concepciones, se formulan algunos interrogantes que permiten elucidar críticamente las implicaciones de cada posición. ; The essay starts with the analysis of the novel "Leviatán" by Paul Auster to reconstruct a counterpoint between two ways of conceiving a critical and politically committed literary practice, linked to different assumptions about the author, the language and the reader. From the analysis of these conceptions, some questions are formulated that allow to critically elucidate the implications of each position.
