Background: Conspiracy theories about the origins of COVID-19 are widespread and have even been propagated by highly ranked state officials and politicians in the US. Health authorities have cautioned that such theories, although not questioning the existence of the pandemic, may increase the spread of the virus by reducing people's efforts to socially distance. Methods: We test this proposition empirically using longitudinal survey data collected at five timepoints during the early outbreak of the virus in the US (N = 403). Results: Multivariate growth curve analyses showed that, although conspiracy beliefs decreased and social distancing increased over time, people holding more conspiracy beliefs at the beginning of the pandemic showed the lowest increase in social distancing. Moreover, cross-lagged analyses demonstrated that people who reported more conspiracy beliefs at any wave tended to report less social distancing at the following wave. Conclusions: Our findings show that COVID-19 conspiracy theories pose a significant threat to public health as they may reduce adherence to social distancing measures.

This article presents the results from a qualitative study that explored how legislation in British Columbia, intended to protect vulnerable adults from harm, is implemented in practice. The legislation contains guiding principles that require the least restrictive and minimally intrusive form of support or intervention be used and that the adult's wishes be respected. Sixteen professionals who work as elder abuse responders in British Columba participated in this study through interviews and a focus group. Fifteen of the study participants were social workers. Grounded theory method was used, and themes were identified. The first theme reveals that responders prefer to obtain older adult consent to service provider involvement, rather than forcing compliance by using statutory authority. The second theme reveals that responders may not be able to intervene in a minimally intrusive manner because of resource shortages and organizational structural issues. These findings have human rights and social justice implications.

Under contract with the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), Pearson VUE reportedly performs much of the work of developing and administering the social work licensing exams required by most states. ASWB charges substantial fees for such exams and, after paying Pearson, has been able to bank considerable sums. One of the key contributions to the arrangement of ASWB is its supply of draft exam questions – which, after statistical pretesting by Pearson, may ultimately appear on licensing exams. Prior research indicates that students may find it relatively easy to guess the answers to such questions. Independent researchers have been unable to verify whether such questions accurately distinguish qualified from unqualified practitioners. In addition, ASWB refuses to disclose the rates at which various schools' graduates pass licensing exams. Generally, ASWB engages in an unusual degree of information suppression. Such suppression appears inconsistent with ethical obligations but consistent with revenue maximization.

Nel presente elaborato viene analizzata la complessa fattispecie dell'aumento del capitale sociale nelle società a responsabilità limitata, ponendo a confronto le due diverse tipologie di aumento operabili. Inoltre viene affrontato il caso specifico dell'aumento di capitale con esclusione del diritto di sottoscrizione dei soci, evidenziando quelle che sono le tutele approntate dal nostro legislatore. Infine verranno affrontati alcuni casi concreti in cui è interessante capire quella che è la sorte del diritto di sottoscrizione dei soci.

L'autore presenta una breve rassegna della letteratura sul tema dell'economia solidale e della decrescita, evidenziando i diversi approcci esistenti e le pratiche in atto sul territorio italiano. La presentazione del caso calabrese di avvio di costituzione di un Distretto di economia solidale viene interpretato come uno spazio di nicchia strategico, nel quale possono nascere e svilupparsi delle novelties, capaci di generare una trasformazione dei territori, legata a ideali di giustizia sociale, economica e ambientale.

Im Zuge der asiatischen Finanzkrise hat die Asian Development Bank (ADB) ihren thematischen Schwerpunkt von wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung auf sozialen Schutz ausgeweitet. Zu den Aktivitäten der Bank auf diesem Gebiet zählte die Konstruktion eines Social Protection Index, um soziale Aktivitäten von Mitgliedstaaten zu messen und zu vergleichen. Eine Analyse der sozialen Sicherung in Vietnam verdeutlicht zwei wichtige Schwächen des Indexes: erstens hat er konzeptionelle Schwächen und lässt Fragen der sozialen Rechte und Umverteilung außer Acht; zweitens bezieht die Messung sozialer Sicherung in Vietnam gefährdete Gruppen wie ethnische Minderheiten, die Armen in den Städten und Frauen nicht in ausreichender Weise mit ein. Angesichts dieser Defizite könnte die Allokation von Entwicklungsprojekten auf der Basis dieses Index die Exklusion gefährdeter Gruppen weiter verschärfen. (ICEÜbers)

Looking at the key theoretical approaches to the social construction of threat in the sociology of deviance and in political science, this article addresses the way boundaries between groups are created in different contexts. Comparison between UK media coverage of terrorists and football hooligans reveals that this is a rational process that draws boundaries on the basis of the position of the target group in the political field rather than the objective seriousness of the threat.

The Salvadoran civil war destroyed local community life throughout the province of Morazán. Despite the peace accords, poverty, unequal land distribution, and a "culture of violence" demand structural and institutional transformations well beyond the individual moral regeneration offered by churches. Religion, however, supplies coping tools, especially for youth, women, and repatriated refugees. By focusing on local issues, furthermore, churches are fostering social participation among hitherto disenfranchised groups, a critical element in building an inclusive, robust democracy.

The paper argues that it is necessary to teach social scientists `data analysis' rather than `statistics'. Instruction in statistical principles needs to be closely integrated with the use of appropriate software packages and secondary data sets. It is also suggested that a discussion of interval level techniques such as correlation and regression should precede the introduction of the supposedly simpler technique of cross tabulation. The merits of intensive short course module teaching are also briefly examined.

International audience ; An account of the night-time sessions presided over by the Mughal emperor Jahāngīr (r. 1605-1627) between 1608 and 1611, the Majālis-i Jahāngīrī by ʿAbd al-Sattār b. Qāsim Lāhawrī (d. after 1619) record at length contemporary debates on a vast variety of topics , to the almost complete exclusion of the major political events of the reign. Even though it is a highly oral work, the text provides a good deal of information on Mughal written culture, especially on two aspects thereof. On the one hand, its multiple references to works of historical, poetic, Sufi and legal literature as well as the anecdotes extracted from these works enhances our knowledge of the Perso-Islamic culture alive at the Mughal court, illuminates (at least in some cases) the channels and actors of transmission (most notably through the commissioning of translations), but also allows one to better understand how this culture was received and used by the elites, first among them the monarch. On the other hand, the details recorded by ʿAbd al-Sattār on the composition of both the Majālis-i Jahāngīrī and the Jahāngīr-nāma (Jahāngīr's memoirs) shed a new light on the production of Mughal historical literature which appears here as a combination of individual and collective efforts. ; Récit des séances nocturnes présidées par l'empereur moghol Jahāngīr (r. 1605-1627) entre 1608 et 1611, le Majālis-i Jahāngīrī de ʿAbd al-Sattār b. Il existe en Belgique un débat animé et récurrent à propos du mécanisme d'indexation quasi automatique des salaires. D'un côté, les défenseurs de celui-ci y voient un dispositif essentiel de préservation du pouvoir d'achat des travailleurs en imposant un ajustement régulier et quasiment automatique des salaires à l'évolution du coût de la vie. D'un autre côté, les opposants à l'indexation estiment qu'elle induit une croissance des coûts salariaux plus rapide en Belgique que dans les pays voisins qui sont ses principaux partenaires commerciaux et qu'elle entraîne de ce fait une dégradation de la compétitivité des entreprises belges. Bien que l'hypothèse selon laquelle l'indexation nuit à la compétitivité soit souvent évoquée, que ce soit par les acteurs politiques, les responsables patronaux, les médias et certains économistes professionnels, cette hypothèse nécessite d'être examinée de façon rigoureuse et non partisane afin que le débat puisse reposer sur un argumentaire solide. D'une part, théoriquement, considérer que l'indexation engendre inévitablement des pertes de compétitivité ne va pas nécessairement de soi. L'indexation ne constitue en effet qu'un mécanisme parmi d'autres visant à adapter les salaires à l'évolution du coût de la vie. La particularité de l'indexation est de rendre cette adaptation (quasiment) automatique alors que dans les pays où un tel mécanisme n'existe pas, cette adaptation se fait généralement dans le cadre de négociations salariales dont la fréquence est plus ou moins élevée selon les pays. Dès lors, à moins de considérer que la préservation du pouvoir d'achat n'est pas une préoccupation majeure des travailleurs dans les pays qui sont les principaux concurrents de la Belgique, il paraît peu vraisemblable que l'indexation soit un facteur systématique de détérioration de la compétitivité sur lelong terme. Etant donné son caractère automatique, l'indexation risque en revanche de pénaliser la compétitivité àcourt termemais l'ampleur et la persistance de l'impact dépendent de la vitesse à laquelle les salaires sont ajustés dans les pays concurrents. D'autre part, il n'existe pas à notre connaissance d'études ayant démontré formellement que l'indexation des salaires en Belgique a contribué à la dégradation passée de la compétitivité des entreprises belges. Il existe bien des études qui examinent l'impact de l'indexation sur la formation des prix et des salaires en Belgique mais l'impact sur la compétitivité n'est cependant pas directement étudié. C'est dès lors cet aspect précis que nous examinons dans ce numéro deRegards économiques. Pour déterminer empiriquement si l'indexation des salaires a nuieffectivementà la compétitivité de la Belgique, la méthodologie que nous avons adoptée consiste à examiner (à l'aide de méthodes statistiques) si les hausses passées des prix du pétrole ont eu systématiquement un impact négatif sur la compétitivité belge. Le raisonnement sous-jacent est simple. Dans la mesure où une hausse des prix du pétrole (pour autant qu'elle persiste quelque temps) induit inévitablement une hausse du niveau général des prix à la consommation, de par le fait de l'indexation, les salaires augmentent également à la suite du choc pétrolier. Si l'ajustement des salaires s'avère être effectivement plus rapide en Belgique qu'à l'étranger, la compétitivité belge devrait se détériorer, du moins à court terme. Les résultats de notre analyse tendent à indiquer que l'indexation salariale n'est pas un facteur déterminant de l'évolution àlong termede la compétitivité des entreprises belges, confirmant ainsi notre point de vue théorique. En revanche, nos résultats indiquent que la compétitivité belge se détériore àcourt termeen cas de hausse des prix du pétrole et que cet impact persiste suffisamment longtemps pour entraîner des pertes de parts de marché.

This Research Note investigates the extent to which social democracy has changed in Europe and Australia as a result of the introduction of the 'Third Way'. In the next section, I discuss the programmatic change made by social democratic parties with respect to the welfare state and economic management, issues that have always been considered their core business. In the following section, the shift from the ideology of the traditional welfare state to the ideas of the so-called social investment state, as part of the Third Way ideas, will be explored. Finally, I shall address to what extent this change in ideology has been influenced by the vote-seeking and office-seeking behaviour of social democratic parties. Adapted from the source document.

Die Wahrnehmung gesellschaftlicher Verantwortung durch Unternehmen wandelt sich mehr und mehr von einer optionalen zu einer verbindlichen Aufgabe. Dies gilt auch vor dem Hintergrund der seit 2017 geltenden CSR-Berichterstattungspflicht vornehmlich für die grossen "Platzhirsche". Für kleine und mittlere Unternehmen bildet die Beschäftigung mit dieser Thematik nach wie vor die Ausnahme, obwohl diese Berichtspflicht über die Wertschöpfungskette zukünftig verstärkt auch an KMUs weitergegeben wird. Der vorliegende Band stellt Konzepte, Instrumente und Verfahren der Integration unternehmerischer Verantwortung auf dem Fundament wirtschafts- und unternehmensethischer Ansätze dar. Dabei wird der Fokus auf die Beantwortung der Frage gelegt, inwieweit die Anwendung der vorgestellten Konzepte das Verhalten auf sämtlichen Unternehmenshierarchien verändern kann.(Verlagstext)
