Recent research examines when and why women join rebel groups as combatants. However, we are only beginning to understand how their presence affects rebel group behaviour and conflict dynamics more generally. I address this gap by analysing how women's participation influences two dimensions of rebel behaviour: their relationship to civilians and their fighting performance. I argue that a greater number of female rebels decreases civilian victimization, but also reduces rebel combat performance. I test these propositions using time-varying district-level data from the Nepalese civil war. The results support both expectations. These findings increase our understanding of the effects of women's participation in civil war.

This article emerged from undergraduate students in an Honors College class on critical race theory at the University of Utah during the spring semester 2020 during the pandemic. The counterstories evolve around critical race theory/Asian American Crit and the historical and current violence against the Asian American community in the United States. Given the recent anti-Asian American backlash which has emerged through the COVID-19 crisis, to the March 2021 murders of the Asian American women and others in Atlanta, we present these counterstories with the imperative of their importance for critical social justice to combat White supremacy.

A postcolonial feminist social work (PCFSW) perspective is an essential theoretical framework with which to analyze global food insecurity and proposed solutions to this urgent social problem. In this article, the PCFSW perspective is elaborated, and the arguments of two groups of global stakeholders that identify women's empowerment and gender equity as crucial to the solution are presented and analyzed. The analysis concludes that food sovereignty aided by agroecology is most suited to social work as it is grounded in the concerns of peasant women, the group most affected by food insecurity and the proposed policies to combat this problem.

AbstractHuman trafficking, in particular the trafficking of women and children, is considered a syndicated international phenomenon, and numerous international agreements have consequently been signed to combat the crime. Iran is one of the many countries that passed legislated laws to battle this evil industry. In the present article, the author examines and compares Iran's legislative approaches towards human trafficking before and after the Islamic Revolution. The Iranian legislation combating human trafficking generally suffers from some serious shortcomings; particularly, the inconsistency regarding this issue between the civil and the Islamic Penal Codes and Iran's Constitution is its most prominent weakness.

This article explores the issue of women's pay in social work within a comparative framework of several other service occupations. A secondary analysis of U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, data on wages and earnings revealed that substantial salary discrepancies on the basis of gender continue to exist throughout the service professions. An examination of the relationship between salary and gender for the position of chief executive officer of human-service related nonprofit organizations also revealed significant salary differences between men and women. Several strategic approaches to combat continued inequities are discussed within the context of the generally inhospitable political climate.

The participation of women in armed combat was arguably the most striking feature of the Greek Civil War (1946–9). The advent of civil conflict marked a shift in the gendered division of military labour, as the female 'novelty' soldier of the earlier Resistance period (1941–4) gave way to the fully integrated female combatant. This article seeks to examine the circumstances which lead to such high levels of female representation within the ranks of the partisan army (the Greek Democratic Army), but also to explore the symbolic functions of this volatile imagery in the context of intense struggles to define Greek national culture and identity.

Violence in the home is a major scourge in the society that needs unique attention to combat. There is a general saying that "a happy mind gives strength to the whole body" which means a happy woman makes a happy home, while a happy home makes a happy society. To this end, violence as a negative condition to the well-being of women is purely devastating to their happiness especially when it occurs within the home. This paper therefore explored survey design method technique in finding out the socio-cultural factors associated with home violence as experienced by women and its effects in Oye Ekiti, a town in Ekiti State of Nigeria. In a convenient sampling technique, data were collected from 200 married women who responded to questionnaire. Hypotheses were tested using chi-square. Results showed that factors such as level of education, religion belief and income were mostly among others not associated with violence in the home, which means there are more underlying factors to look out for. It was therefore recommended that government should incite stricter laws in addressing home violence cases family courts should also be put in place early warning systems to become aware of the consequences of ill-treatment of women at home. Also, religious organization should be more proactive in the teaching of morals towards curbing home violence.

The article provides a comparative analysis of the socio-psychological portrait of women who have been subjected to violence abroad and in Russia. The subject of the analysis is the psychological, social and national characteristics of women who have ever been subjected to violence. The difficulties of adopting the draft law "On the prevention of domestic violence in the Russian Federation" are considered in detail. This draft law gives a broad interpretation of the concept of "domestic violence" and proposes to accept this phenomenon as a legal problem in order to effectively combat domestic violence. It is noted that Scandinavian women differ from each other in their national and psychological characteristics, consequently, when faced with domestic violence, they will also behave completely differently. However, the socio-psychological portrait of the victims, both in Russia and in Northern Europe, will be the same. In this regard, there is an urgent need for theoretical and empirical research in the field of organizing social work with women who have been subjected to violence, where the key element is the provision of a wide range of social services by social work specialists to this category of the population. The social experience of the Northern European countries in providing assistance to female victims of domestic violence is very effective.
