The increased tensions surrounding radical Muslims and radical movements in the political Islam are not only manifested in the Western countries but also in the Muslim world itself. Tendencies and political movements that undermine the status quo have proliferated since the 1970s. They plead for a far-reaching islamization: funding politics, law and society on Islamic foundations. Dit proefschrift bevat vier studies op het gebied van financiële stabiliteit, economische groei, bankenconcurrentie en marktconcentratie in de financiële sector. Een belangrijke bevinding is dat de liquiditeit van banken een belangrijke rol speelt bij de bepaling van de liquidatiekosten van banken tijdens financiële crises. Deze uitkomst impliceert dat de maatschappelijke kosten van financiële instabiliteit beperkt kunnen worden door regelgeving die banken dwingt een buffer van liquiditeit aan te houden. Een andere bevinding is dat toenemende marktconcentratie in de financiële sector van de Europese Unie geen noemenswaardig effect lijkt te hebben gehad op de financiële stabiliteit van deze sector. Deze bevinding impliceert dat, in tijden van financiële turbulentie, herstructurering van banken door middel van fusies een interessant alternatief is voor het redden van banken door middel van overheidsinjecties. Ten slotte toont dit proefschrift aan dat het loslaten van concurrentiebeperkende regelgeving in de bancaire sector van de Verenigde Staten tot positieve effecten op de economische groei heeft geleid. Deze positieve effecten beperken zich niet tot de staten in de V.S. die de betreffende regelgeving hebben afgeschaft, maar strekken zich ook uit tot omliggende staten. Deze uitkomst suggereert dat concurrentiebeperkende maatregelen in de financiële sector een remmende werking hebben op de economische groei. ; This thesis comprises four studies on the issues of financial stability, economic growth, banking competition and market concentration in the banking sector. An important finding is that the liquidity of banks plays an important role as a determinant of the costs of the liquidation of banks during financial crises. This outcome implies that the societal costs of financial instability can be reduced by regulation which requires banks to hold a liquidity buffer. Another finding is that increases in the degree of market concentration in the financial sector of the European Union have not had an economically meaningful effect on the financial stability of this sector. This finding implies that, in episodes of financial distress, restructuring mergers of banks are an attractive alternative to governmental bailouts. Finally, this thesis shows that the deregulation of competitive restrictions in the banking sector of the United States has had positive effects on economic growth. These positive growth effects are not restricted to deregulated states themselves, but have spilled over to neighboring states. This outcome implies that competitive restrictions in the banking sector hamper economic growth.

This thesis focuses on the medical practice and legal regulation of medical scientific research with humans in medical emergency situations.

The construction of the European Community (EC) has widely been understood as the product of either economic self-interest or dissatisfaction with the nation-state system. In Europe United, Sebastian Rosato challenges these conventional explanations, arguing that the Community came into being because of balance of power concerns. France and the Federal Republic of Germany-the two key protagonists in the story-established the EC at the height of the cold war as a means to balance against the Soviet Union and one another. More generally, Rosato argues that international institutions, whether military or economic, largely reflect the balance of power. In his view, states establish institutions in order to maintain or increase their share of world power, and the shape of those institutions reflects the wishes of their most powerful members. Rosato applies this balance of power theory of cooperation to several other cooperative ventures since 1789, including various alliances and trade pacts, the unifications of Italy and Germany, and the founding of the United States. Rosato concludes by arguing that the demise of the Soviet Union has deprived the EC of its fundamental purpose. As a result, further moves toward political and military integration are improbable, and the economic community is likely to unravel to the point where it becomes a shadow of its former self

Citizenship in an Enlarging Europeconsiders the impact of economic, political and social transformation in Central and Eastern Europe in the context of EU enlargement. In a lively and engaging narrative, the author uses gender as the lens through which to examine the processes of democratization, marketization and newly emergent nationalism. She shows the centrality of gender to these processes and the ways in which rigid codes of masculinity and femininity limit people's choices. Individual chapters examine mainstream politics versus the promotion of civil society as routes to empowerment and participation. Barbara Einhorn highlights the growing public-private divide in the region, pinpointing the negative influences of the neo-liberal market model and its gendered media representations. Voices of scholars and actors from the region enliven the narrative. De nieuwe en geavanceerde technologie die we bezitten en gebruiken verzamelt constant data over onze dagelijkse bezigheden. De inzet van deze technologie door handhavingsautoriteiten voor toezichtsdoeleinden maakt een dergelijke activiteit alomtegenwoordig, werpt vragen op over evenredigheid en bemoeilijkt de bescherming van het recht op privacy voor particulieren. Deze dissertatie verkent het bestaande juridische kader van het recht op privacy in de Europese Unie en beoordeelt de geschiktheid ervan om de uitdagingen aan te kunnen die de inzet van niet oorspronkelijk voor dat doeleinde ontwikkelde toezichtstechnologie door handhavingsautoriteiten creëert. De dissertatie bevat de conclusie dat het huidige juridische raamwerk ongeschikt is om het recht op privacy voor particulieren te beschermen wanneer niet specifiek voor dat doeleinde geconstrueerde technologie voor toezicht ingezet wordt. Daarnaast identificeert zij een aantal juridische beginselen die voorgesteld worden om de huidige onverbondenheid tussen de rechtsregels en de snel ontwikkelende technologie te overbruggen. Dientengevolge wordt de technologieneutraliteit van de rechtsregels afgewogen tegen het technologiebewustzijn van alle andere relevante actoren. The employment of this technology by law enforcement authorities for surveillance purposes makes such an activity ubiquitous, raises questions of proportionality, and challenges the protection of the right to privacy of the individuals. This thesis explores the existing legal framework established for safeguarding the right to privacy in the European Union and it assesses its adequacy for dealing with the challenges that the law enforcement use for surveillance of technology not originally designed for that purpose presents. Finding that the current legal framework is inadequate for protecting the right to privacy of the individuals when non-purpose built technology is used for their surveillance, the thesis also identifies a number of legal principles which are proposed to be used for bridging the current disconnection between the legal rules and technology. This has as a result that the technology neutrality of the legal rules is balanced by the technology awareness of all other relevant actors. The thesis argues that while technology might escape the legal rules, it is still possible that the way technology is used by law enforcement complies with the fundamental right to privacy.
