A panoramic, provocative account of the clash between British imperialism and Arab jihadism in Africa between 1870 and 1920 The Ottoman Sultan called for a "Great Jihad" against the Entente powers at the start of the First World War. He was building on half a century of conflict between British colonialism and the people of the Middle East and North Africa. "This is a military history of Armenian insurrection in the Ottoman Empire from 1890-1915 and the evolution of an Ottoman counterinsurgency response. It describes the growth and activities of the Armenian revolutionary committees in the context of empire-wide insurgency. At the beginning of the First World War, the Ottoman government believed that the Armenian revolutionary committees directly threatened the empire's military lines of communications which were weakened by the concentration of the Ottoman army on the front lines away from the empire's core areas. In 1915, the Ottoman government pursued a counterinsurgency campaign against the Armenian revolutionary committees from a position of constrained resources, resulting in a strategy of population relocation explicitly designed to separate insurgents from a base of support in a narrowly defined area. Using archival sources, the book establishes a comprehensive framework for understanding why the Ottoman state relocated the Armenian population of six Anatolian provinces in 1915 but did not relocate Armenians living elsewhere in the empire"--

This book addresses an important but little-noticed phenomenon in the revolutionary world of military technology. Across a wide range of otherwise-unrelated weapons programs, the Pentagon is now pursuing arms that are deliberately crafted to be less powerful, less deadly, and less destructive than the systems they are designed to supplement or replace. This direction is historically anomalous; military forces generally pursue ever-bigger bangs, but the modern conditions of counter-insurgency warfare and military operations 'other than war' (such as peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance) demand a military capable of modulated force. By providing a capacity to intervene deftly yet effectively, the new generations of 'useable' weaponry should enable the U.S. military to accomplish its demanding missions in a manner consistent with legal obligations, public relations realities, and political constraints. "This book is a collection of eight essays on politics and defense written over the past quarter of a century. What particularly unifies them is the distinction between the military and police (or punitive) uses of force and implication of each for preservation of moderate political practices and skill in the use of armed force. The various essays illustrate these conceptual points by examination of the Cuban missile crisis, the Vietnam War, U.S. nuclear strategy and current "RMA" and counter-insurgency doctrines, among others.
