In this article I examine the nexus, the mutually reinforcing connection between neoliberal and neoconservative ideology and social and political forces, and variation between countries such as Britain, the USA and Turkey. This analysis is then applied in particular to neoliberal/ neoconservative education 'reform' in England, focusing on marketisation, high-stakes testing, privatization and pre-privatisation, and the increased surveillance of teachers as a result of new public managerialism in education, as reinforced and enforced by the school inspection system. These effects are then related to the lived work experiences of specific teachers, using their own word. I conclude the article by examining and calling for resistance, for teachers and critical education workers to educate, agitate and organize in various arenas, and to consider the importance of political programme- in particular to consider the utility of the transitional programme as advanced by Trotsky.

The report describes federal legislation and programs that support higher education and to assess Latino participation. While there are many programs at the state, institutional, and community levels that facilitate access to higher education for Latinos, the Higher Education Act (HEA), due for reauthorization is the main policy vehicle at the federal level for postsecondary education programs. These programs provide concrete examples of educational activities that can informand be informed bylocal activities and programs to facilitate Latino student access, persistence, and completion of higher education. A series of developments in the costs and financing of colleges and universities set the context for HEA reauthorization. This study begins by addressing the cost of higher education and the impact on Latino participation, followed by a statistical summary of Latino achievement in higher education, including college enrollment and completion rates. All of the data cited are from public sources, including analysis by the U.S. Department of Education. Effective state and local programs may influence the creation and expansion of some federal programs. Therefore, this study offers an example of a state program and several community-based programs that stimulated the creation of federal programs. ; Pew Hispanic Center

This note investigates the effects of the education level, product market rigidities and employment protection legislation on growth. It exploits macro-panel data for OECD countries. For countries close to the technological frontier, education and rigidities are significantly related to TFP growth. The contribution of the interaction between product market regulation and labour market rigidity seems particularly substantial. -- Productivity ; growth ; regulations ; market rigidities ; education

Hardly a day goes by without some reference to the potential impact of artificial intelligence in our lives. I believe that universities both in the United States and around the world will also experience significant change brought about through AI.

Although the structure and content of the sociology major has been addressed by a variety of scholars and several American Sociological Association (ASA) task forces over the past three decades, the structure, content, and even the purpose of the sociology minor has been ignored. In this article, we address this gap in the literature through two investigations. The first utilizes an examination of the websites and academic handbooks of 248 bachelor's degree-granting institutions to discern the structure and contents of the sociology minor. We identify four models for the sociology minor found in U.S. higher education. The second study utilizes data gathered through the ASA 2019–2020 Department Survey. Included in the survey were a variety of questions regarding department chairs' perceptions of the sociology minor. We conclude by suggesting that we should not only be concerned with what the sociology minor currently is but also consider what the minor could be.

In: Great debates in higher education
This book explores the way in which the pressures of globalisation are shaping higher education funding and access across the world. Higher education is seen as a way of developing human capital and building knowledge economies, but major debates continue about who should attend university; how the costs of higher education should be distributed between the individual student and the state; how students from non-traditional backgrounds can be helped to succeed in higher education; and the intended and unintended consequences of widening access initiatives.Globalisation is not a uni-directional force, but is accompanied by movements to reinforce the local and the regional, often driven by fears of loss of identity. Universities across the world have become more powerful and autonomous from the state, but at the same time students as consumers of education have an increasingly powerful voice. They frequently find themselves in opposition to the business model which infuses higher education systems and student protests have had a strong influence on policy development. This book explores the way in which the twin pressures of globalisation and localisation play out in higher education across the developed world, often reflected in more specific debates on fees regimes, access and culture.
