In August 2005 President Bouteflika announced the introduction of a national reconciliation initiative that included a Charter for Peace and Reconciliation. Against this background, the article introduces the views of three high profile London-based Algerians, who were interviewed in July 2006 and asked to give their assessment of the current situation inside Algeria: Abdelhamid Brahimi, who served as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1988 and who also held a range of posts in the government; Saad Djebbar, a lawyer and political analyst; and Haroune Hassine Ouguenoune, a former high-ranking member of the Algerian secret services (DRS).
