The independence processes in Central America have been influenced by the area's geographical position and its geopolitical relevance in the continent. The region has been seen by the global powers as a space-route, especially from the eighties to the present. This geopolitical condition has predisposed the formation of the Central American countries by fragmenting their development process and weakening their whole potential; as a result, the territory is even more vulnerable to external interests. Therefore, analyzing Central America from the Critical Geopolitics perspective will contribute to understand it as a place defined by politics of space in which global powers interfere undermining possibilities for regional integration among other effects. The geographical location of this region has been used as a trade-route for international transportation, being this one of the reasons for the dispute regarding the Panama Canal's control by global powers; besides its strategic location allows other kinds of flows as it is the case of migrants and drugs, for example. Since thearea has been built due to external influences,
Replaced at the centre of strategic debates since the 2013 Ukrainian crisis, the Baltic area has become the backbone of multiple geopolitical imaginaries, sometimes contradictory. Applying a critical geopolitical approach, this article proposes to take as a study case the challenge raised in Sweden by the Pyhäjoki nuclear power plant project in Finland, built by the Russian conglomerate Rosatom, to identify these geopolitical representations of the Baltic. Research shows the emergence of three speeches presenting the Baltic as an area of environmental danger, such as the theatre of a new Cold War and an interface between Russia and Europe. Re-established at the center of Geostrategic interests since the beginnings of the Russian crisis in 2013, the Baltic space has behaved the backdrop for multiple and legitimate counter-political narratives. Relaying on a critical, geopolitical approach, this paper studies the Swedish opposition to the construction of the Pyhäjoki nuclear power plants in Finland, handled by the Russian conglomerate Rosatom. Our case study is then used to identify these geopolitical representations of the Baltic. Our first results show the existence of three narratives advocating the Baltic as an ecologically endangered space, the theater of a "new Cold War", and an interface between Russia and Europe. ; The Brexit referendum is a good example of the particular vulnerability of the European project when fighting disinformation. Therefore, EU institutions have developed a series of initiatives throughout 2018 to define a European strategy to counter disinformation that emphasizes the responsibility of social networks in reporting false content. In addition, given the weakness of the European public sphere, the European institutions support the creation of European networks of fact checkers. This strategy implies the denunciation of lies, rather than the promotion of alternative interpretive frames, which authors like Lakoff (2004) consider an error from a framing point of view. Empirically, we demonstrate through an analysis of the main networks of actors on this matter (academics, foundations, think tanks, media, social network platforms and fact checkers) that there is a dispute to define the best way to combat disinformation at the European level.
