Die Untersuchung über das Urlaubsverhalten (Binnentourismus) der Marokkaner bestätigt die These, daß die urbane marokkanische Gesellschaft in der Lage ist, externe (westliche) Einflüsse in die traditionelle Lebensweise zu intergrieren, so daß das konventionelle dualistische Konzept von Traditionalität und Modernität als Erklärungsmuster verfehlt ist. Drei Aspekte des Urlaubsverhaltens werden untersucht: Zahl der Familienmitglieder, die gemeinsam Urlaub machen im Vergleich zur Haushaltsgröße (Kleinfamilie, Großfamilie) am ständigen Wohnort; Urlaubsformen; Tagesablauf am Urlaubsort. Kernstück des Beitrags ist eine zusammenfassende Darstellung und Bewertung der unterschiedlichen Ergebnisse der verschiedenen empirischen Arbeiten über die Entwicklung der Löhne im Deutschen Reich von 1871 bis 1913. Es wird ein Überblicküber die Lohnentwicklung von einem möglichst frühen Zeitpunkt an bis hin zur neuesten Zeit gegeben, wobei Daten aus der Zeit der letzten 140 Jahre vorliegen. Im Mittelpunkt der Analyse steht die Entwicklung des Durchschnittslohns, die entsprechend der politischen und ökonomischen Einschnitte in verschiedene Epochen geteilt wird. Nacheinander werden analysiert: (1) die nominale Lohnentwicklung; (2) die Entwicklung der Lebenshaltungskosten; (3) die reale Lohnentwicklung. Die ergänzende graphische Darstellung ist auf indizierte Maßzahlen beschränkt, da Größen dieser Art in besonderer Weise geeignet sind, eine zeitliche Entwicklung zu veranschaulichen. Mit Hilfe der vorgestellten Kategorien wird ein Aspekt der Lebensbedingungen von Individuen beschrieben: der Einkommensbereich und seine Veränderungen. (KW)

In dem Beitrag wird untersucht, ob der Tatbestand einer unzureichenden Steuerung regulativer Politik gegeben ist. Zunächst werden der Weg des Interesses von den Inhalten zu den Instrumenten der Politik und die Typisierung der Instrumente staatlicher Intervention skizziert. Dabei wird kurz die Geschichte der regulativen Politik nachgezeichnet, um die faktische Bedeutung dieser Form politischer Steuerung für moderne Gesellschaften zu unterstreichen und damit zugleich die Bedeutung der Frage nach eventuellen Wirkungsschwächen zu betonen. Die Untersuchung dieser Wirkungsschwächen geht von der Feststellung aus, daß die Auswahl eines Instruments für die Lösung eines anstehenden Problems in einem doppelten Sinne kontingent ist: Einmal im Sinne Luhmanns; zum anderen im Sinne der Kontingenztheorie der Organisationen. Nach der Erläuterung dieser Feststellung wird die Ausgangsfrage präzisiert. Eine Krise der regulativen Politik könnte danach in zweifacher Weise entstehen: Das Instrumentarium regulativer Politik wird gewählt, obwohl es unter den gegebenen Umständen nicht zweckmäßig ist; als Folge der Erosion bisher bestehender Voraussetzungen. Beide Ursachen werden im folgenden diskutiert. Im weiteren werden die Gründe aufgeführt, warum die Folgebereitschaft der Normadressaten - ein weiteres Hindernis der Wirksamkeit regulativer Politik - zunehmend prekär wird. Die Ausführungen kommen zu dem Schluß: Die Grenzen für die erfolgreiche Anwendung des regulativen Instrumentariums sind heute enger gezogen, wobei die Gründe vor allem in Eigenheiten der zur Regelung anstehenden Probleme, in Merkmalen moderner Gesellschaftsstruktur und -dynamik und in damit wieder in Zusammenhang stehenden Reaktionstendenzen der Normadressaten bei regulativer Politik liegen. Despite progress in economic and social development in the 2000s, there was an increasing dissatisfaction with life among the population of many developing Arab countries. At the end of the decade, these countries ranked among the least happy economies in the world—a situation that fits the so-called "unhappy development" paradox. The paradox is defined as declining levels of happiness at a time of moderate-to-rapid economic development. This paper empirically tests the strength of association of a range of objective and subjective factors with life evaluation in the Middle East and North Africa region in the years immediately preceding the Arab Spring uprisings (2009–10). The findings suggest a significant, negative association between life satisfaction levels in the region during this period and each of the main perceived reasons for the 2011 uprisings—dissatisfaction with the standard of living, poor labor market conditions, and corruption.

Developing countries have urbanized rapidly since 1950. To explain urbanization, standard models emphasize rural-urban migration, focusing on rural push factors (agricultural modernization and rural poverty) and urban pull factors (industrialization and urban-biased policies). Using new historical data on urban birth and death rates for seven countries from Industrial Europe (1800–1910) and thirty-five developing countries (1960–2010), this paper argues that a non-negligible part of developing countries' rapid urban growth and urbanization may also be linked to demographic factors, such as rapid internal urban population growth, or an urban push. High urban natural increase in today's developing countries follows from lower urban mortality, relative to Industrial Europe, where higher urban deaths offset urban births. This compounds the effects of migration and displays strong associations with urban congestion, providing additional insight into the phenomenon of urbanization without growth.

Two international ring studies were performed to develop appropriate parameters within standard toxicology study for screening of immunotoxicological potential of unknown substances. These studies followed OECD TG 407 and included a number of additional examinations. CSA was selected as model for its immunosuppressive and HCB as model for its immunostimulating effects. Reproducibility of data was defined by significant findings in at least 50% of participating laboratories. In-life clinical observations, values for WBC parameters, and changes of lymphoid organ weights suggested immune effects. Elevated IgM titers indicated increased antibody formation in HCB-exposed rats. Cellularity of T-cell compartments in thymus (medulla), spleen (PALS), and lymph nodes (paracortical zone of mesenteric and popliteal LN) were dose dependently decreased in CSA-treated rats. The numbers of follicular germinal centers were reduced in LN. HCB induced cellular proliferation in spleen marginal zones and endothelial activation in HEV of mesenteric and popliteal LN and GALT and in small pulmonary venules. Data obtained by specific immune parameters indicated immune effects; however, statistical inference was limited to low numbers of participating laboratories. In spleen, both substances decreased lymphoblast proliferation after ConA mitogen stimulation. Reduced numbers of antibody-forming cells in PFC assay indicated impaired T-cell-dependent humoral immunity by CSA, which was not seen for HCB. Altered fractions for B- and T-cell subpopulations were identified in spleen for both substances. In order to predict immunomodulatory effects of CSA or HCB, histomorphologic examination of lymphoid tissues resulted in the most reliable and sensitive data to distinguish immunosuppression and -stimulation
