"Liminal Politics in the New Age of Disease explores the phenomenon of 'liminal politics': an open-ended 'state of exception' in which normal rules no longer apply, and things which were previously unimaginable become possible - even appearing remarkably quickly to represent a 'new normal'. With attention to the emergency measures introduced to counter the spread of Covid-19, it shows how the emergency suspension of democratic accountability, ordinary life and civil liberties, while accidental, can lend itself to orchestration and exploitation for the purpose of political gain by 'trickster' or 'parasitic' figures. An examination of the cloning of political responses from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, with little consideration of their rational justification or local context, this volume interrogates the underlying dynamics of a global technological mimetism, as novel technocratic interventions are repeated and the way is opened for new technologies to reorganise social life in a manner that threatens the disintegration of its existing patterns. As such, it will appeal to scholars and students of sociology, social theory and anthropological theory with interests in political expediency and the transformation of social life"--
Introduction. This article is about the development of society as an integral complex-organized system. It discusses significant aspects of structural changes in Ukrainian society, which relate to social, economic, political spheres and systemic social transformations. The basic criteria, which are inherent in the transition Ukrainian society and influence the processes of social differentiation, are revealed. The main attention is focused on the context of social dialogue as a manifestation of social activity that regulates relations between social groups. In the new conditions of reforming the Ukrainian society the topical issue is the study of processes and changes that occur with the new conditions of globalization changes. In this sense, it is important to consider the problems of social structuring of Ukrainian society, due to the formation of new layers, classes and groups, new status-role relations of an individual, the change of social identity. The processes of transformation that take place in all post-Soviet countries and, at the same time, the peculiarities of modern processes of Ukrainian society need to be studied.Purpose. Consideration of certain aspects of changes and processes that take place in the modern transformational Ukrainian society. Based on the theory of social interaction to reveal that the social nature of constructive social activity of modern Ukrainian society "lies" in the plane of "social interaction - social dialogue - social trust". Effective (constructive) social interaction between certain social groups leads to the formation of new social relations that form the possibility of social dialogue between them, which, in turn, affects the evolution (progressive reform) of the structural organization of society.Methods. In order to achieve the goal, analytical and theoretical analysis, comparison, generalization of literary sources are used.Originality. The transformation of society within the socio-cultural plane should consist in defining its identity, overcoming amorphousness in society. The vitality of society is largely determined by the ability of social groups to respond adequately to the dynamics of abrupt, radical social changes. This is expressed in the possibility of making the conflict-generating processes predictable and controllable, and it is periodically arising, by monitoring the trends that have emerged in the social actions of certain social groups, as well as the adoption of preventive measures. The urgency of the raised problem is that today the dynamics of democratic transformations in Ukraine depends to a certain extent not only on the effectiveness of current policy and socio-economic reforms, but also on the readiness of certain social groups to adequate forms of social activity, which in turn depend on the degree of social interaction between them.Conclusion. Peculiarities of transformational changes cause the loss of stability and unambiguity of society's stratification. Gradually borders between groups and layers disappear, new groups with uncertain status appear. The problem is that the old value-normative system has been destroyed, and a new one is still being created, and social anemia is spreading in the society. Based on the theory of social interaction, we can state that the social nature of constructive social activity of modern Ukrainian society "lies" in the plane of "social interaction - social dialogue - social trust". Mobile phones and Internet use can enable human capabilities that can contribute to positive developmental outcomes (Smith, Spencer, & Rashid, 2011; Ndung'u & Waema, 2011; Agüero, de Silva & Kang, 2011; Sen, 1999). Communication networks, in Africa particularly mobile phones, have been recognised as an important component for social mobilisation (Castells, 2009). Reports have focused on the role of mobile phones in organising social protests and political mobilization (Comninos, 2011) such as the food protest in Mozambique in 2007/08, and violent ethnic mobilisation in Kenya in 2009 and around the world. Further, since the Arab Spring, the use of the mobile phone for social mobilization has become an increasing focus of research. As part of this research which seeks to explore the role of ICTs in contemporary social and political engagement, this paper presents an empirical assessment of predominant social and demographic factors that are predictors of mobile Internet usage. It is based on nationally representative ICT household survey data collected by Research ICT Africa in 2011 and 2012 across 10 African countries. This study draws on previous studies on technology adoption, and tests on the effect of social factors and demographic variables on mobile Internet usage. Also, it presents descriptive data on network exposure. It poses the following research questions: what are the social aspects and demographic factors influencing mobile Internet usage in selected African countries? To what extent does belonging to specific civic affiliations such as religious, recreational or political groups impact on mobile Internet usage? The odd of using mobile Internet is assessed against demographic factors such as age, gender, income and level of education, among others. The impact of mobile Internet usage for social mobilisation is evaluated against belonging to specific social affiliations such as religious, recreational or political organisations. Other predictors include affiliation with certain social groups and the closeness of the local community. Network exposure was measured in the ICT household surveys, by asking respondents to list how many people out of their top five contacts are users of mobile phones and social network sites. Further, the analysis includes also an assessment of whether the use of the mobile phone increased or decreased contacts with specific social groups. What activities users got involved in through the mobile are also included into the analysis. The study concludes with policy implications on mobile Internet usage in African countries in particular related to democracy, empowerment and capability development. Furthermore, since it investigates whether mobile Internet usage enhances contacts with different social groups such as family, friends, religious or political groups, this study seeks to assess the potential of the technology to mobilise different networks in selected African countries.
This paper is an attempt to take a critical sociological look at the UK government's flagship 'Big Society' policy. To do this I utilize the political sociology of Émile Durkheim, specifically what I call his 'socialist theory'. This overlooked aspect of Durkheim's sociology contains a strong normative critique and alternative project concerning the role of the State, private property, economic regulation and inequality. By applying this to the Big Society it is argued that the latter will result in: increased moral fragmentation, the furthering of economic inequality and the development of a 'postcode lottery'. Instead, Durkheim's advocacy of functional representation in the form of the 'corporations' seems to hold some contemporary relevance.
This article reports upon aspects of a small-scale qualitative study of lowincome working families. The study was conducted in the context of recent policy changes in Britain that are intended to promote labour force participation by low-income parents, especially mothers. It is argued that while popular opinion is generally supportive of mothers taking paid employment, some deep-rooted ambivalence remains. Mothers in lowincome families can experience the life-course transition involved as difficult in terms of the practical obstacles, the moral dilemmas and the ideological pressures. Without additional measures to support them in relation to their parental obligations, low-paid women are being pressed, at best, to exchange familial dependency for economic exploitation.

The degree to which private enterprise economies can be aided or retarded by government intervention is of great political and economic importance. Finds a Democratic-neutral, Republican-positive Phillips curve for both the long and the short run. Argues that this should be incorporated into further macroeconomic models. (SJK)
Explains the variation in the Consumer Price Index in Israel. Examines the relationship between the nation-state as the focal organization and the international arena as the external environment. Shows that Socialist political control of the economy brings about weaker ties between the international economic environment and CPI changes in Israel. Capitalist political control of the economy results in a tight relationship between the internal scene and CPI changes. (SJO)

This study evaluates aspects of newspaper reporting about death penalty cases and capital defendants. In a content analysis of newspaper coverage of a representative sample of 26 death penalty‐eligible defendants who were brought to trial in California, we found that articles tended to cite primarily from law enforcement and prosecutorial sources, focused very heavily on the characteristics of the crime, and omitted or de‐emphasized most other aspects of the case. News coverage generally failed to place the criminal behavior of the defendant in any social historical or contextual framework from which readers (as potential voters and jurors) could grasp the potential mitigating elements of the case. We conclude that newspaper coverage of capital crimes may influence public support for the death penalty, and undermine public appreciation of the role of social contextual factors in crime causation in general. It also may bias the perspective with which potential jurors approach specific capital trials and even contribute to the lack of instructional comprehension that has been found to plague the death sentencing process.
