Benefiting from a widely recognised experience of the field of bioethics, the Council of Europe which represents all the democratic countries of Europe, has embarked on the ambitious task of drafting a European Convention on bioethics. The purpose of this text is to set out fundamental values, such as respect for human dignity, free informed consent and non-commercialisation of the human body. In addition to this task, protocols will provide specific standards for the different fields concerned with the application of biomedical sciences. The convention and the first two protocols (human experiments and organ transplants) are due to be ready for signature by mid 1994.

INTRODUCTION: In order to tackle the pandemic, governments have established various types of advisory boards to provide evidence and recommendations to policy makers. Scientists working on these boards have faced many challenges, including working under significant time constraints to produce 'evidence' as quickly as possible. However, their voices are still largely missing in the discussion. This study explores the views and experiences of scientists working on government advisory boards during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the aim to learn lessons for future pandemic management and preparedness. METHODS: We conducted online video or telephone semi-structured interviews between December 2020 and April 2021 with 21 scientists with an official government advisory role during the COVID-19 pandemic in Belgium, the Netherlands, UK, Sweden and Germany. The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed and analysed using a combination of inductive and deductive thematic analysis techniques. RESULTS: Scientists viewed the initial focus on biomedically oriented work during the pandemic as somewhat one-dimensional, but also highlighted difficulties of working in an interdisciplinary way. They found it difficult at times to ensure that the evidence is understood and taken on board by governments. They found themselves taking on new roles, the boundaries of which were not clearly defined. Consequently, they were often perceived and treated as a public figure. CONCLUSION: Scientists working on advisory boards in European countries faced similar challenges, highlighting key lessons to be learnt. Future pandemic preparedness efforts should focus on building interdisciplinary collaboration through development of scientists' skills and appropriate infrastructure; ensuring transparency in how boards operate; defining and protecting the boundaries of the scientific advisor role; and supporting scientists to inform the public in the fight against disinformation, while dealing with potential hostile reactions.

People move, individually and collectively, for a combination of economic, social, political and cultural reasons. The impact of migration on the individuals concerned, their families, the countries they leave and the societies they join raises issues that are hotly contested by academics, policymakers and politicians. By using a wide variety of analytical approaches the contributors to this book reveal the complexity and significance of this increasingly important phenomenon in Western European countries, which links these societies to the wider world. On 29th March 2017, the United Kingdom expressed its intention to leave the Union. In this way, Article 50 of the EU Treaty has been activated and the fate of millions of people and their families who have enjoyed the rights granted by the Union was in an uncertain situation. Therefore, Brexit negotiations sought a compromise on measures to ensure the rights of Union citizens residing in the United Kingdom and citizens of United Kingdom residing in the member states as well as their family members and on 29th to 30th of January 2020 a Withdrawal Agreement was ratified, which redefined the rights and status of international families. This master thesis aims to identify how and to what extend United Kingdoms withdrawal affects the rights and the status of members of international families. A study on the regulation of the withdrawal and the reasons behind Brexit has shown that Article 50 of the EU Treaty does not define on what specific rights must be agreed, but the United Kingdoms desire to end the free movement of persons determined that the content of the rights granted to international families had to be discussed separately. The work, therefore, examines the Union acquis on the movement of international families and distinguishes fundamental rights to be divided to two parts: substantive rights enabling international families to leave and enter, reside and remain, and procedural rights aimed to eliminate the effects resulting from the exercise of the movement rights. To determine what measures have been implemented a comparative analysis of Union acquis and Brexit regulations has been carried out. It has shown that the Withdrawal Agreement covers all excluded rights granted to international families, but their content varies at each stage of Brexit. The work also provides an analysis of the status of members of international families and stipulates that the legal status of international family members may change, depending on the model of the relationship to be applied at a particular stage of Brexit and the nationality of the family member as well as the place where rights are exercised. However, at any event, the Union and the United Kingdom are obliged to properly fulfil commitments arising from the withdrawal and ensure a consistent interpretation and implementation of adopted regulations.
